FULL GOSPEL CHURCH, 11 So. Newtown Robert Stcdman Lauded In Campus Drama Role By Dorothy Pruitt No light piece of entertainment it John Steinbeck's "Of Mice and Men." It is stark, tragic social drama wherein the emotions of rugged characters are laid wide open. It has to do mainly with two poverty-bitten migrant laborers in the Salinas valley, George ana Lennie. Recent production of this play I at the University of Oregon theatre was outstanding for sev eral reasons, one being the per- ! forma nee of our own local Rob-1 ert Stedman. Cast as the big hulking, pathetic Lennie. Mr. Stedman presented a character ization that will live In the memory. - To save a character such as Lennie from falling into the maudlin and melodramatic re quires the spark of sincere act ing. Mr. Stedman's work con tained this spark. The part of Lennie, in his hands simply came to life. All the plodding, trusting ways of the big fellow with the strength of an ox and a child-like mind were held con stantly in character and marked the important contrast to his loyal friend, the sharp, skeptic George. Not once did the pitch or tempo of another actor's lines seep into his work. All the touching qualities of Lennie were there, and the ter rible. His wistful desire to follow George's instructions and "keep out of trouble;" his per sistent longing to "have a little piece of land and to tend the rabbits;'' his love for mice and puppies and "the feel of soft things," and his dumb wonder at the inevitable death these creatures met in his brute-like paws; the constant pull within him between right and wrong and his never quite understand ing what it was all about not one of these qualities was neg lected by Mr. Stedman, not one by-passed. Especially gripping was the final scene in which Lennie, fleeing from the law, returns to the lonely river bank to wait for George to come. Miller, 21, both of Medford, pleading guilty In jus tice of the peace court Saturday morning to charges of larceny, were both sentenced to serve four months in the county jail. The complaint Involved the at tempted theft of a truck tire, the first such charge filed by the city since the federal rubber ra tioning law has been in effect. City police said that Brandon and Miller attempted to steal a six-ply, U. S. heavy duty tire off a truck registered to R. R. Hen drickson of Route 2, which was parked on North Front street early Saturday morning. According to the police report, an officer happened to witness Brandon and Miller remove the spas tire from the truck about 12:15 Saturday morning. How ever, when two men came out of the Pastime pool hall, Bran don and Miller dropped the tire and scurried away. Brandon was caught by the policeman, the police report sta ted, and lodged in city Jail. Later Saturday morning Miller went to the station to see Brandon, and was immediately taken Into custody. Miller, police said, told them Brandon had on his (Mil ler's) shoes, and that he wanted to regain them.
