(AP) The nation's largest navy school has been forced to close its gates because of the flood of Incoming recruits. Since Pearl Harbor, 850 men a day have entered the U. S. nav al training station here and to day Capt. T. D. Carr, executive officer, said it was possible no mere volunteers could be ac commodated until the next class graduates. The station gives six week basic course before sailor Joins the fleet. Capacity of the school Is a nav al secret. Until last November the average attendance was about 8,000. In World war days it reached 47,000. Communications DECLARES MRS. BULKIM MISTAKEN To the editor: A communication of recent date In your paper has been called to our attention wherein a Mrs. Bulkin complained that businessmen are sadly absent in the newly organized Oregon State Guard here. She criticized the businessmen because they had not responded. Mrs. Bulkin has been misin formed. More than half of the men and officers in headquarters company operate their own business estab lishments in Medford. Company A has better than fair share of businessmen on its roster. Many businessmen were put on the reserve list or were re jected because of age or other disability. They certainly tried to get In. Medford doctors gave freely ot their time and equipment in giving physical examinations to the men. They receive no com pensation. Major Tengwald, battalion commander, is a Medford busi nessman. Under ordinary circumstances, communications in newspaper based entirely on misinforma tion are Ignored by those con cerned, but in fairness to the men and officers in the Oregon State Guard here, we feet that Mrs. Bulkin' communication should be corrected.
