News Behind
The News
by Paul Mallon
(Continued From Pas On)
made before the war and which
F.D.R. now considers "exces
sive."
If anyone thinks business
generally is making any money
out of this war. let him look
at the stock market quotations,
now depressed far below the
pre-war level. Furthermore,
most defense contractors are
limited to 0 percent profit In
government contracts, and few
will make that much. Much
business Is going out of busi
ness. That la why congressional tax
bill maker Doughton's comment
on the budget was limited to
the observation that his com
mittee would have to see that
no one killed the goose that lays
eggs.
Congress will not follow the
vague Roosevelt tax recommen
dations. It never has.
e
MR. Roosevelt's budget left
ganthau and his 19 percent pay
roll tax out In the rain barrel
under the Ice. The president
nonchalantly suggested only
that congress might consider
payroll and other taxes. That
will not be enough White House
pressure to float the plan Mor
ganthau has been promoting
around the house ways and
means committee. Mark it dead.
A SERIOUS tie-up of freight
" west of Chicago to the Pa
cific coast has resulted from the
concentration of traffic In that
direction. Freight has occasion
ally been backed up all the
way to Salt Lake City. Rail De
fense Coordinator Joe Eastman
is tackling this as his first prob
lem and will have it straighten-1
ed out shortly.
Much goods are likely to be
routed hereafter on slower sec
ondary lines and reorganiza
tion of the existing military
traffic system will com Immed
iately. Now each branch of the war
department (air, engineers, ord
nance, quartermaster, etc.) has
a separate traffic director.
Overall control is necessary.
IITHAT this army needs as
much as planet and tanks
is a large number of officers
with modern battle etperlence.
It needs captains and lieuten
ants who have been there, who
know actual conditions to be
met by the American expedi
tionary forces which are to
complete the encirclement of
the axis.
. Consequently a liberal num
ber of Junior officers will be
in the first batches to be sent
to Africa, Russia, the Far East,
Ireland.

Communications
DECLARES MRS. BULKIM
MISTAKEN
To the editor:
A communication of recent
date In your paper has been
called to our attention wherein
a Mrs. Bulkin complained that
businessmen are sadly absent in
the newly organized Oregon
State Guard here. She criticized
the businessmen because they
had not responded.
Mrs. Bulkin has been misin
formed.
More than half of the men and
officers in headquarters company
operate their own business estab
lishments in Medford.
Company A has better than
fair share of businessmen on its
roster.
Many businessmen were put
on the reserve list or were re
jected because of age or other
disability. They certainly tried
to get In.
Medford doctors gave freely
ot their time and equipment in
giving physical examinations to
the men. They receive no com
pensation. Major Tengwald, battalion
commander, is a Medford busi
nessman. Under ordinary circumstances,
communications in newspaper
based entirely on misinforma
tion are Ignored by those con
cerned, but in fairness to the
men and officers in the Oregon
State Guard here, we feet that
Mrs. Bulkin' communication
should be corrected.
Thank you,
James Grlgsby, com
mander, Co. A.
Moor Hamilton,
commander head
quarters Co., First

Guard.
