Oregonian, hat uncorered a long forgotten memory treasure for us The Cooky Tree. Was a time when Christmas just couldn't pass without the Cooky Tree. Ever see one? It's a small Christmas tree, say two or three feet high, used as a table decoration. Beside the tinsel and snow the tree was laden with gayly colored Christmas cookies: stars, diamonds, clover leaves, Santas, ginger men and just cookies. In England the tree was maintained until Twelfth night when it was placed in the garden with bits of suet tied to the branches for the birds. As we remember it those cookies were put there to eat. As we ate them the supply was renewed until a few days after Christmas when it was moved to the yard where for weeks it was refilled with crusts and other bits for the birds. You have often heard it regretfully expressed that it is too bad Christmas lasts only a day. Not so with the Cooky Tree if you love birds. Ben says "Some folks pretend that the Cooky Tree is for children, but few hearts are grown so old that the small boy of one of them, the little girl of another is quite excited."
