SOCIETY and CLUB NEWS of the WEEK Br BETTT SHOEMAKER Local Reaident Returns F rom Mexican Trip Mrs. Paul Janney has returned to her home on the Jacksonville highway after a five weeks' trip in Mexico in company with Mrs. J. R. Holmes of Lyman avenue. They were met in Guadalajara by a driver and continued south into Mexico by auto, stopping enroute to Mexico City to see points of Interest. One of the interesting features of the trip were the pyramids at Cholulu. Although one of the pyramids is Just being un covered there are many tunnels into the pyramids and the trav elers explored the high gallery which is surrounded by a fresco. It is thought the pyramids are over 2,000 years old and atop one is a small Catholic church. The peon markets throughout Mexico proved to be fascinating, filled with vegetables, peasant pottery and silver. They en Joyed a trip on the floating gar dens at Xochimllco. The flower be-decked barges are paddled up the long winding canal and sing ing and colorful scenery added to the festivity of the trip. Upon their return to Califor nia Mrs. Janney visited in Alta dena and other California cities before returning north. Mrs. Holmes, the mother of David and Harry Holmes, has Just pur chased a home on Lyman ave nue where she will reside. Delta Debt Plan "Shanty Town" Dane Miss Nanette Holmes enter tained members of Delta Debs . . k U OIJ. Tuesday evening at 7:80 o'clock. "Shanty Town" dance to be held at the guild hall Dec. 28. Miss Holmes is chairman of the dance. Other committee chair men for the dance are: decora tions. Miss Neysa Wall, and ad vertising Miss Ann Van Valiah. The group also discussed the Christmas basket which is be ing prepared by Miss Mary Dooley. Miss Carol Johnson was voted into the club as new member. Formal and informal initiation followed. Later games were played with Miss Dorothy Hayes and Miss Lois Prlngle win ning prizes. Refreshment were served by the hostess. Miss Prlngle will entertain the club at her home the eve ning of Dec. 8. The business meeting will be preceded by a skating party at the Ice Arena. Pinochle Club Enjoys Dinner Mr. and Mrs. George Winter! entertained their pinochle club last evening at their home on North Ivy street. Dinner was served at 0:30 followed by an evening of cards. Attending were Mr. and Mrs. Ed Pease. Mr. and Mrs. Ed Gould, Mr. and Mrs. L. S. Ba shaw, Mr. and Mrs. E. D. Scrip ter. Mrs. Katherin Satterlee, Mrs. Mabel Kitson and the host and hostess. The ceremony was read by Judge C. E. Claypool. Those attending the wedding from here were the brides mother, her brother and sister- in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Louis Straube and young son, Fred Both are well known in Jack- son county where they attended high school. They will make their home in Seattle where Mr. Vogel Is employed by the Boeing Aircraft company. Church Society Complete Plana For Annual Bazaar Completion of plans for the bazaar to be held Dec. 9 and assembling of contributions for the Manley Center and Angel Island and other projects spon sored by the Women's Society of Christian Service were dis cussed Tuesday at the home coming held at the Methodist church. It was announced that all contributions will be shipped early in December in order to arrive before Christmas. Miss Mae Phipps was in charge of devotions choosing as her topic, "Thanksgiving." She gave ex amples of being thankful for blessings In America. Reports of business and cir cles were given. Mrs. Hill gave several selections during the penny march and Miss Mary Ann Gates, accompanied by Mrs. Marguerite Conrad at the piano, sang two numbers. Mrs. H. S. Chlrgwtn was In charge of the program. Later Priscilla circle served refresh ments. Mrs. Ralph Woodford presided during the business meeting and homecoming in the absence of Mrs. W. W Walker, who has been called to Minne sota due to the serious illness of her father. Barn Dance To Be Held An old-fashioned bam dance Is to be held at Lincoln school ! gymnasium Saturday at 8 b. m At that time the rye waltz, polka, square dances and other dances so popular many years ago will be featured. The dance Is being sponsored by the Lincoln school P.-T.A. in an effort to encour age old dances which are be coming popular again. Luncheon Given At Walden Home For Pythian Chief Officers of Talismen temple. No. 40, Pythian Sisters, honored their most excellent chief, Mrs. Robert Stout with a turkey lun cheon Friday, at the home of Mrs. W. L. Walden. The tables were decorated with a Christmas motif with lighted red tapers, gay colored Christmas balls and chrysanthe mums carrying out the theme. Each cover wa marked with a tiny place card holder shaped like a small Christmas tree and covered with snow. Mrs. Stout received a gift from the mem bers. Attending were Mrs. H. G. Klein, Mrs. Luella Steiner of Salt Lake City; Mrs. Stout and the hostess. t Shower Honora Bride-Elect At Central Point Mrs. Viola Troutman enter tained at her home in Central Point Monday evening with a miscellaneous shower honoring her sister, Miss Doris Penland, bride-elect of Ernest Harris of Central Point. The shower followed a treas ure hunt motif and the honored guest was given clues to follow in order to find her gifts. Games were played and refreshments served later in the evening. SpU The regular meeting of Jackson- vine Missionary society was held Thursday afternoon at the Presbyterian church with Mrs. Otto Niedermeyer as hostess. Mrs. Vivian Beach led the devo ttonals after which Mrs. A. L. Beck reviewed a report from the national committee on social education and action. Former Reaident Weds Nebraska Girl, Nov. 20 Word is received here of the marriage of Miss Ann Cannon, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E. S. Cannon of Benkelman, Neb., to Dr. Francis M. Neff, son of Mrs. B. F Neff, 217 West Second street, Medford. The ceremony was performed In Las Vegas, Nev..Nov. 20 with Miss Mary Wilcott and Gene Everett at tending the couple. The bride wore a brown suit with matching accessories and an orchid corsage. Following a short wedding trip to Big Bear they will reside at 1810 East Seventh street, Long Beach. Prior to her marriage the bride attended the University of Nebraska and Chadron State Normal School and taught school In Nebraska. The bridegroom graduated from Medford high school where he was popular in athletics and attended Mon tana State college. He took pre- medical work at the University of Oregon and was graduated from the College of Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons in Los Angeles in 1939. He also was pinclpal of Oak Grove school in Jackson county. He has been connected with the Walter Reid hospital for advanced surgical and technical training in the army. 4 Emonomic Problema To Be Discussed By Dr. Donald Erb "Some Problems of Economic Policy" has been chosen as the topic of Dr. Donald M. Erb, pre sident of the University of Ore gon, who will address an open meeting of Jackson County League of Women Voters Thurs day at 8 p. m. in the county court house auditorium. Dr. Erb, who holds his Mast er's degree and Ph.D. in econo mics, attended Harvard where he secured his degrees. He taught economics in Stanford prior to coming to the Univer sity of Oregon. He is a member of the Pacific Coast and Ameri can Economic associations. .AH who are interested are Invited to hear Dr. Erb's address. Pythian Club Honors Member Pythian club members hon ored Mrs Russell Wilson with a shower at the home of Mrs. W. L. Walden Monday afternoon following their regular business session. Gifts were presented the honored guest. Cards were at play during the afternoon with Mrs. Florence Seigal holding high score and Mrs. Genevieve McCorkle, con solation. Refreshments were served later to 18 guests. As sisting the hostess were Mrs. Bessie Michael and Mrs. Wal den's daughter. Miss Esther Walden. Pro America Club To Elect Officers Pro America members will elect new officers at their meet ing Dec. 10 at Hotel Medford. At that time a repprt of dele gates to the district convention in Portland will be heard. The Pro America meeting scheduled to meet Dec. 3 has been post poned until the following week. Planning to attend the district Pro America gathering in Port land are Mrs. C. J. Denman, Mrs. Dwight Findley and Mrs. William McAllister. . Visitor Returns To California Mrs. Bruce Bundy has re turned to her home' in LaJolla. Cat., after spending several weeks at the home of Mr. and Mrs. A. S. V. Carpenter at Top sides. That evaning he will be guest speaker at a meeting of the Jackson County League of Woman Voters. Oregon Alumne To Hear Prexy At Luncheon To appear in Medford Thurs day is Dr. Donald M. Erb, pres ident of the University of Ore gon. He will address members of the University of Oregon alumni at a noon luncheon at Hotel Medford. Arrangements for Dr. Erb's visit are being made by Otto J. Frohnmayer, director of the alumni associa tion. This will be the first meeting of this kind in a number of years for Jackson county alum ni and all who can attend are urged to be present in order to meet Dr. Erb. Others Inter ested, especially parents of Uni versity of Oregon students, are Invited. Working on the com mittee to complete arrange ments for Dr. Erb's entertain ment is Frank Farrell. Dr. E W. Durno will act as toastmas- ter at the noon luncheon. Dr. Erb was selected Thurs day as "Eugene's First Citizen for 1941" by the Eugene real estate board. Robert W; Pres ton, president of the realtors, said that Dr. Erb's work In se curing return of science work to the university was an im portant factor in determining the board s choice. Dr. Erb is the fourth in a series of prom inent men to be honored by the board since it inaugurated the custom in 1938. A large local committee Is contacting all alumni in Med ford and vicinity and Mrs. Frank VanDyke heads a similar Ashland committee. 1 Sojourner Club Meets New Members Medford Sojourners were In troduced to five prospective members Thursday when they gathered at the Hotel Medford for dessert luncheon and an afternoon of cards. New mem bers were Mrs. Charles Emerick, Mrs. John Carnegie, Mrs Bailey, Mrs. Gordon Plckell and Mrs. Marvin Miller. The Winningham clan cele brated its 12th annual reunion at-the Jacksonville court house on Saturday, November 22. Fifty-four members of the fam ily were present to enjoy the dinner which was served at 2 o'clock. At 9 o'clock the family spon sored a dance to which all friends of the family were in vited. At midnight a lunch was served to all present and danc ing was enjoyed until 2 o'clock. GARDEN CLUB December meeting of Medford Garden club will be held in the high school auditorium Thursday at 7:30 p. m. when T. G. Bacher of the Swiss Floral company of Portland will be guest speaker. He writes: "My basic reason for coming to your town is to bring new facts and to give in formation on garden material that will enhance the charm of local gardens and make you hap pier for having come to this meeting of the Medford Garden club." The lecture will be illustrated with colored slides and is open to the public. Garden club members from other clubs in the valley are invited.
