Scott didn't think up the V-for-victory emblem, but he had a better Idea. He got a patent on it, and now he stands to make a fortune from its com mercial use. The V has been widely em ployed, as in jewelry and cloth ing designs, but strangely enough nobody ever took the trouble to safeguard it with a patent. ' Scott, genial, hustling sales manager for a Tulsa boat com pany, got his bright idea recent- . ly. He employed a patent attor ney, advanced the necessary S1S0 patent fees, and sat back to see what would happen. Plenty happened, and so quickly it made Scotty's head 'swim. A search of the patent office files in Washington dis closed that the Tulsan had a good hunch. There was no pat ent on the V and one was issued to him. The number of the patent, 130317, may be as lucky for him as the winning combination on a sweepstakes ticket. For no sooner had it been granted than a dozen firms of fered to negotiate with him for exclusive rights. Wedford Boy to Gel Special Training in Navy Service School Norfolk, Va., Nov. 28 (Spl) James Albert Thurston of Medford, Ore., who recently en listed in the United States navy, has been chosen as one of the apprentice seamen qualified to study at a navy service school. He will be given 16 weeks of Intensive instruction which will prepare him for special service in the navy. This training will provide him with a trade, if he ever desires to return to civilian life. Thurston, who enlisted at the recruiting station in Washing ton, D. C, has Just completed his recruit training at the Nor folk naval training station and will enter the Aviation Machin ists Mate's school. He is the son of Mrs. Lula Thurston of Medford. . American campaign, Propaganda Minis ter Paul Joseph Goebbels wrote in a special article for the weekly Das Reich, pub lished today that "we do not underestimate the United States but we do not over estimate them either. "If Roosevelt should take over the war. then he would not be running behind the war any more but the war behind him a situation de cidedly more unpleasant for him. Bean, constructing quartermaster in charge of advance planning of the proposed Medford canton ment. In reality, he added, no one would know that a change bad been made here. It is the plan, he said, to transfer quar termaster corps personnel worn ing on construction projects to the corps of engineers, the trans fer probably being on a tem porary basis. Youthful Pair Held In Robbery Murder Cumberland, Ky., Nov. 28. (IP) Two 16-year-old boys who were arrested in the slaying of Ward Loveless. 91, Washington attorney, were returned to Vir ginia today, several hours after their capture. E. D. Helms of the Lessburg. Vs. police department, said the youths, Paul Bernard Ho back, Bluefield. W. Va., and Tommle Peterson, Leesburg, had been charged with murder. Cumberland Patrolman Jim my Johnson quoted the boys as admitting robbing and beating but denied knowing the lawyer was dead. Episcopal Rector in School of Prophets; Lay Reader Coming The Rev. Herald G. Gardner. rector of Saint Mark's church, in company with two other clergy from the diocese of Oregon, is attending a school of the prophets at Grace cathe dral, San Francisco. Because of the rector's ab sence on Sunday there will not be an 8 o'clock service. How ever, the church school will be held as well as the 11 o'clock service of morning prayer. At this later service Thomas V. Williams will act as lay reader and the address will be given by Colonel Theodore Hopkins Colonel Hopkins, now a resident of Rogue River valley, has had a distinguished record as a lay reader and speaker in the Epis copal church in various parts of the country His coming to Saint Mark s is eagerly antici pated. On Sunday, Dec. 14. Father Gardner will be back in the pulpit at 11 o'clock and at 8 p. m. that Sunday Bishop Benjamin D. Dagwell will be present to preach and confirm. A dinner will preceed the serv ice, to which the community is invited. IS DRAFT EVADER Los Angeles, Nov. 28. (&) Frank Elliott Hopson, 31, who claimed to be a minister of Je hovah's Witnesses and thus ex empt from conscription, was convicted yesterday of draft evasion. Federal officials said the case would set a nation-wide precedent in determining the status of hundreds of such Witnesses over the nation.
