By Franklin Mullin Chicago, Nov. 18. iP) The traditional Thanksgiving feast, of deepest significance this year, will cost Americans more than at any festivity in the past dec ade, food price statistics indi cated today. Measured in the cost of the various food items, market ex perts estimated probably 16 per cent more cash must be laid on the counter to get the same bas ketfull which, a year ago, came at a bargain. There's hardly an Item that's not more expensive, except pos sibly a few vegetables and "trimmings." Cranberries are priced about the same as a year ago in the Chicago wholesale market. Some poultry are only slightly higher, particularly ducks and geese which, whole sale dressed, are up 6 to 7 per cent. Turkeys were up about 20 percent. Some spices are sharply higher and relatively scarce. Retail Prices Lag Trade analysis indicated that in general retail prices have lagged behind the advance in wholesale markets. In instances, while some foods are costing dealers more than a year ago, figures posted at counters, are little, if any higher. The bureau of labor statistics November 8 index of wholesale food prices for the country as whole was 23.8 percent higher than a year ago. The bureau's index for retail food costs just a month ago was only 16 percent higher than a year earlier but was the highest since January, 1931, L SAVED BY HEROIC ACT OF COMRADE Tacoma, Nov. 18 (JP) Army air corps officers at nearby Mc Chord field air base cited for heroism today the act of Pvt. Clarence L. Singsank, of New Vienna, Iowa, in saving Pvt. Charles L. Wimer, of Ashland, Ore., from more serious or pos sible fatal injuries in a 75-foot fall from a tree. Singsank and Wimer were out on the air base reservation with a timber-topping detail. Wimer had climbed to the top of a 75 foot tree when his grip gave way suddenly. Singsank, on the ground be low the tree, tried to catch Wi mer and break the fall. The Iow an broke Wimer's fall but in so doing seriously injured his hands. One hand was split by a spike from Wimer s tree spurs. Wimer was taken to the Van couver, Wash., army barracks hospital for treatment. He was badly bruised and suffered a fractured leg and arm. Singsank also is in a hospital. Both sol diers are members of the 43rd air base squadron. Pet. Charles Wimer is the son of Mr. and Mrs. C. L. Wimer of 575 Liberty street, Ashland. He is a former Ashland high school football player. Rickshaws will be banned from the streets of Rangoon, Burma, effective April 1, 1942. Libel for Salvage Filed Against Ship Seized by Cruiser San Juan, Puerto Rico, Nov. 18, (JP) The United States dis trict attorney's office today filed in the name of a U. S. warship a libel for salvage against the German freighter Odenwald, "known as the Willmoto of Phil adelphia," which the navy said was seized in the South Atlantic while flying the American flag. The libel asserted that the ship was found flying the Amer ican flag and abandoned by her master and crew after having hoisted a signal "I am sinking; send boats for passengers." The action also stated that the ship had been brought here by the crew of a United States cruiser at great risk and asks the court to decree a full salv age award for services rendered. Washington. Nov. 18. (JP) Senator Taft (R-Ohio) said today that Republicans might stake their chances of winning con trol of the house in next year's elections on a pledge to the vo ters that the party would reject all proposals for sending an American expeditionary force abroad. Senator Nye (R-N.D.), like Taft an opponent of administra tion foreign policy, expressed the view that his party's chances next year "depend a great deal on how well we succeed in get ting rid of Wendell L. Willkie and his crowd." "Mr. Willkie and his associ ates have created a lack of con fidence in the party," Nye told reporters. "If he is actively In the picture, then I think we may lose some seats we otherwise would gain." Willkie, the 1940 Republican presidential nominee, consistent ly has supported administration foreign policy and has urged the party to do likewise, but a ma jority, of Republicans in cong ress have regularly voted against it. American Clergyman Is Arrested in Rome Rome, Nov. 18. (JP) Rev. Hiram Gruber Woolf of Elmira, N. Y., rector of St. Paul's Amer ican Protestant Episcopal church in Rome, was arrested today and held incommunicado for ques tioning by police. The United States embassy was given to understand in re- sponsible quarters that Woolf was held for investigation on suspicion of intelligence activ ity, pending formal charges. ROAD STILL OPEN TO DIAMOND LAKE The Diamond Lake highway was still open this morning af ter being plowed out, Rogue River national forest headquart ers said, but the AAA office stated that it would not encour age travel over the highway this time of year because of the dan ger of getting marooned in a snow storm. Diamond Lake highway, lead ing from the Crater Lake high way at Union Creek to Diamond lake and The Dalles-California highway, will be closed offic ially December 1, sooner if snow blocks the highway, the AAA office said. At this time of year snow storms are liable to occur suddenly and because of the lack of habitations along the route and the consequent danger of becoming isolated, motorists were cautioned make a careful check on wcath er conditions before starting out on the Diamond Lake highway.
