MEDFORD, OREGON, SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 9, 1941 PAGE nVB Society and Clubs by Betty Shoemaker Mrs. Fichtner I Returns From Extended Trip Mrs. Clyde Fichtner. 101 Clark street, returned Thursday from a seven weeks motor trip In California and Mexico. She reports many interesting exper iences and during her stay in the south visited many friends and relatives. While in Mexico Mrs., Ficht ner visited a Mexican school and was interested to find that many of the students were able to speak English as they attend ed night school in order to learn the language. She said the Mexican parents were eager for their children 4 to be able to speak English. She enjoyed a motorboat trip about Golden Gate bay and at tended horse races at Caliente and Tanforan. Another exper ience was inspection of the old est sailing boat on the Pacific coast, known as "Pacific Queen," now in San Francisco. She was taken on a tour 01 ; MGM motion picture studios I and saw the large B-19 bomber, the largest airplane to be built in the United States. Before re turning to Medford Mrs. Ficht ner visited several army camps, among them Camp Callan and Fort Rosecrans on Point Loma, with friends from San Diego, where she formerly resided. Mrs. Fichtner was elected Miss Jackson County last spring by the Shasta Cascade Wonder land association and many places where she visited she was introduced as Miss Jackson County. A.A.U.W.' Benefit Bridge Well Attended A.A.U.W. members enter tained with benefit bridge Wed nesday evening at the homes of A.A.U.W. members. Proceeds will be used for the A.A.U.W. scholarship fund. Individual prizes were awarded at each home and a grand prize for the entire group. Mrs. Henry P r 1 n g 1 e was awarded grand prize with Mrs. I. E. Schuler second. Individual prizes were presented to Mrs. Martin Sands, Mrs. William Mc Allister, Mrs. Fred Carr, Mrs. Ernest Barnes, Mrs. Hugh Ford, Mrs. Frank Humphrey, Mrs. H. P. Jewitt, Mrs. J. C. S. Weills, Mrs. R. J. Henry, Mrs. Fritz Nissen, Mrs. Jessie Miles and Miss Catherine Ford. State Officer Visits Local Rebekah Lodge Six candidates were Initiated into Olive Rebekah lodge Mon day evening when the state president. Miss Myrtle McAlpine of Eugene made an official visit to the local lodge. Other visi tors were present also, bringing greetings from their lodges. Mrs. Ethel' Bailey, assembly chaplain from Roseburg, an nounced that the state assembly will be held in Roseburg In May, 1942. Initiated were Carrie Milnes, Florence Boussum, Laura Wick-! er, Dolly Love, Ida Hollars, Adalaide Swartz and Minnie Jarmin, reinstated. Visitors at tending included Mr. and Mrs. Albert McClung of Los Angeles; Sister Fernland from Kansas; Ethel Bailey of Roseburg; Min nie Willetts of Cottage Grove. s Altar Society Planning Festival St. Anne's Altar society is completing plans for the an nual Harvest Festival to be held at St. Mary's gymnasium November 18. Cafeteria dinner will be served and dancing en joyed later in the evening. Booths and concessions are be ing planned by the society mem bers. Mrs. O. J. Halboth is gen eral chairman. LeMires Visit ' At Fick Home Mr. and Mrs. J. C. LeMire of Klamath Falls visited several days recently with Mrs. Le Mire'i parents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred J. Fick, 608 Newtown street. T.A. members on "Opportuni ties for P.-T.A. at Eagle Point" at the P.-T.A. meeting Wednes day at 3:30 p. m. at the school house. Miss Yetta Olson will lead the girls glee club In sev eral selections. The subject, "Does Money Make the Man?" will be discussed by Miss Olsen. P.-T.A. officers and members extended thanks to the public for contributing toward a suc cessful Hallowe'en carnival at the schoolhouse October 31. A large crowd attended. CALENDAR Fidelity Circle To Meet All Day Fidelity Circle of the First Methodist church will hold an all-day meeting at the home of Mrs. Mabel Herron, 1S3 North Oakdale avenue, Wednesday. Potluck luncheon will be served at noon and members will work on articles for the bazaar. The meeting begins at 10:30 a. m. Mrs. McAllister To Be Speaker A timely and interesting ad dress on "Preservation of Self Government as Guaranteed by the Constitution of Our United States" Is to be given by Mrs. William McAllister at the No vember 15 meeting of Crater Lake chapter, Daughters of American Revolution. Luncheon To Honor Gold Star Mothers Gold Star Mothers 'will be honored Tuesday at a luncheon at the Hotel Medford by mem bers of the American Legion Auxiliary of Medford Post No. 15. PIf!-, i f j i J 1 i I EIGHT BOY SCOUTS TO GET HIGH RANK Eight Medford and Gold Hill Boy Scouts will receive the highest rank in Boy Scout work at a special court of honor be ing planned for the county court house Monday evening. "It is unusual," said Don R. Newbury, court of honor chairman, "to have eight Scouts receive their eagle scout awards at the same time." Eagle is the highest rank In Boy Scout work and is seldom achieved by a Scout in less than three or four years. The formal court of honor to which the pub lic Is invited will commence promptly at 8 p. m. Scouts ap pearing for advancement in the different ranks are expected to be present between 7:30 and 7:45 p. m.
