Departments of County And Schools Possible. As an agency of the Medford Community Chest, the Jackson County Public Health associa tion has for 23 years been the "spark plug" of public health work In this county according to Mrs. J. C. S. Weills, the or ganization president. Reporting on the work of the organization as one of the Community Chest agencies Mrs. Weills said, "our association was started in 1918 to initiate and support such activities as may raise the . standard of health of this coun ' ty and we have never varied from that original objective." A study of the association's report to the Community Chest shows that it pioneered in the field of public health nursing and was largely responsible for establishment of the present county department of public health with Its many services. Rather than cease its program when a portion of the work was taken over by the county, the association has continued to reach out Into newer fields of public health and has supple mented the work of the county department. Many Phases At present the association cooperates with the County Health Department and the health programs In both city and county schools. They are .represented on the child guid rance committee, act as treas urer for the polio fund, and handle the sales of seals for the Oregon Tuberculosis ' associa tion. Completely on their own re sponsibility the association op erates the dental clinics. This is a tremendous job the cost of which consumes a large share of the associations budget. Commenting on the Jackson County Public Health associa tion, C. E. Gates, Community Chest campaign chairman, said "it would be perfectly true to say that every home in Jackson county benefits from the work of this agency. Some receive free dental care, some receive direct nursing help, every home is a better one because this association has had the courage to start and stick with health work in Jackson county. FELT ON COAST Curry County Talks Divorce From Oregon To Get Mining Help Gold Beach, Ore., Oct. 4. OP) Curry county began looking into the possibilities today of seced ing from Oregon and joining California. The county court yesterday signed an order appointing a commission to study procedure and make whatever application is necessary to California au thorities. On the commission ore Mayor Gilbert E. Gable. Port Orford; Collier H. Buffing ton, Gold Beach, and Elmer Bankus. Brookings. The movement started after a delegation of citizens declared the county's mineral possibilities were being ignored by Oregon officials while mineral deposits are being developed all over the nation. They expressed confi dence that as a California coun ty, Curry's resources would get more rapid development. Defense Stamps in High School Office For Pupil Purchase U. S. defense savings stamps will be available for purchase in the principal's office of Med ford senior high school begin ning next Monday, Leonard B. Mayfield. principal said today. Frank Hull, chairman for Med ford. conferred yesterday with Mr. Mayfield and his faculty and explained the aims and purposes of the defense bonds and stamps. Calif., Oct. 4. OV A strong earthquake was felt in Eureka Friday but caused no ap preciable damage. The shock, apparently cen tered off the northern California coast, was described as the most 1 severe in six years in this north ern California coastal city which feels an average of IS to 20 quakes a year. Late sleepers were awakened and all resi dents felt it. It was a long, strong shock that seemed to last about a min ute during which many resi dents felt as though someone had grabbed them and was shak ing them. VP) Klamath's two National Guard batteries of the 249th Coast Ar tillery ran into a rousing wel come here Thursday night. Brought home on special leave from Fort Stevens in six char tered busses, the 214 men in cluding the 249th Coast Artil lery band, will be guests of the city for the weekend. A parade, two dances, a football game, )free admission to theatres and free lunch all day long were arranged. The men will return to Fort Stevens Sunday. Japanese Advance Near Rail Junction Shanghai, Oct. 4. P The Japanese army declared tonignt that its new drive in Honan pro vince had put its advance units within six miles of the vital railway junction of Chengchow, smashed the Chinese 98th army and killed 2.000 and captured 3,000 Chinese soldiers. General Wo Shihgamin, com mander of the 98th army, was among the dead, Japanese dis patches said. Tax Commission Order Is Defied Portland, Oct. 4. (P) Two members of the Multnomah county equalization board today defied the state tax commission which ordered revision of the 1941 tax rolls.
