(JP) Grain buyers bid prices of cer- Sls up almost a cent a bushel, more in some cases, today as the market extended its recov ery of the week. Wheat and oats registered gains of almost a cent and corn and rye were up as much as a cent or more in some cases. Soy beans rose about 2 cents. Small profit taking sales pared some of the gains before the close but wheat finished 3-9 higher than yesterday, December $1.22-'4. May $1.28H-V4; corn 4-4 up, December 81, May 87: oats H-i higher; soybeans -2Vi up and rye Vt-V higher. Wheat showed net gains of more than two cents for the week but was still about 3 cents below the four year peaks estab lished September 12. Oats were up about 3 cents, rye more than 2 cents and soybeans about 8 cents. Some oats demand was attri buted to exporters although no foreign business could be con firmed. Lard gained 3 to 8 cents, largely In sympathy with grains. Here is how one automobile maker is tying in with the drive. Called the "car of the hour," because it operates on one-third less gasoline than most cars on the streets today, tne new auto mobile is placarded with honors Streamlined Sedanet Featured by Buick at Washington, D. C, center of the gasoline conservation drive. Tne national emblem in tne drive, "I'm Using One-Third Less Gasoline," is pasted on the windshield of a new, 1942 Nash "600" by one of the gas conser vation girls at the fuel saving booth in the center of Washing ton. These new Nash cars, which go between 2S and 30 miles to a gallon, are now making their appearance all over the country. Rome, Sept. 27. (P) Italy's bread was ordered rationed to day, starting next Wednesday, and a group of measures was ap proved by the cabinet to con serve material, defend the lira and pay for the war through heavy taxation of profits. The rationing was announced after Premier Mussolini inform ed the cabinet that the 1941 grain crop was insufficient for the country's needs. Most of the measures revised reinforced previous decrees in tended to discourage Italians from investing their cash in pro perty or industrial securities rather than government bonds with which Italy is paying for the war. ITUar Cms Fords Previewed by Dealers at Oakland, California Meeting Seven hundred Ford dealers and salesmen from all parts of the Richmond branch territory gathered at the Oakland Civic auditorium Tuesday for the pur pose of viewing the new 1942 Ford lines of motor cars the Ford six. Ford V-8, Mercury. Lincoln Zephyr and Lincoln. This was the largest automo bile dealer meeting held so far this season in the northern Cali fornia territory, according to C. A. Winetrout, Jr., manager of the Crater Lake Motors, local Ford dealer, who attended the bay city gathering. The meeting was called by C. R. Mullan, manager of the Rich mond branch of the Ford Motor company, who has Just returned from a visit to Dearborn and a conference with Ford Motor company sales executives. The dealers were given a pre view of the new 1942 Ford, Mer cury and Lincoln cars which will be announced and put on dis play at dealer showrooms throughout northern California in the very near future. Al though full details regarding the new models will not be dis closed until the public presenta tion, automobile editors who at tended the press preview, held a day in advance of the dealer meeting, declared all three lines feature distinctive new styling and are wider, lower and more powerful. A number of engineering changes have been made which produce a performance with greater operating economy and the riding qualities of all three cars have been still further im proved, and of special Interest to the public is the fact that the Ford line offers a Ford six as well as a Ford V-8. Mr. Mullan in talking to the dealers, declared that the 1942 cars were the finest the Ford Motor company has ever manu factured. He distributed to the newspapermen an interview with R. H. McCarroll, chief metallurgist, in which Mr. Mc Carroll explains with specific examples the means used by the company to conserve metals vital to defense and at the same time to produce automobiles which are nevertheless superior to those made when the manufac turers had free access to ma terials of all kinds. The metal lurgist said that the principal effect of the changes was an In crease In the manufacturing cost, since some of the materials now used were more difficult to fab ricate. WALL ST. AFTER BIG LOSS Washington, Sept. 27. (IP) Proposals for a compromise be tween factions seeking to enact legislation to create a Columbia power authority to market the energy from the government's great hydro-electric projects on the Columbia river in Washing ton and Oregon are being dis cussed by members of the con gressional delegations from the states. As yet the discussions have not reached a stage beyond cas ual talk, but they indicate a willingness of the factions to try to get together on legislation vi tal to their section. (D The stock market took heart today and recouped modest portions of the relatively heavy losses suffered during the week. While there was little out standing in the day's news to touch off a real rally, the mild bidding that appeared was at tributed mainly to growing be lief in financial quarters that the 6 per cent corporate profits ceiling advocated by the treas ury, blamed for the sharp tum ble of Thursday, would be dis approved by congress. The Associated Press average of 60 stocks came back .2 of a point at 43 but on the week showed at net loss of .4.
