La Grande, Burns and Myrtle Point held first places In the four di visions of the 1941 Oregon cities traffic safety contest at the end of July, it was announced by the secretary of state's office. Bend, leading the first divi sion comprised of cities of 10, 000 and over, has held first place in its division every month this year. It is the first year Bend has been entered in this division, moving Into the group on the basis of Its population increase as shown In the 1940 census. Klamath Falls was in second place and Salem third. In the second division, cities of from 5 000 to 10 000 popula tion, La Giande was followed by Marshfield in second place and Oregon City in third. In the third division Burns was first, Roseburg second and Tillamook third. Myrtle Point, Union and Woodburn held the top three positions in the fourth division. In addi tion to these fatalities, speed too great for conditions has been a factor in many other crashes in the state. Automotive engineers have discovered that high driving speeds throw a heavy extra bur den on a car's motor to over come wind resistance, the divi sion said. At 80 miles an hour, wind resistance takes an extra 48 horsepower as compared to only six extra horsepower to overcome wind resistance at a speed f 40 miles an hour. Hence.
