IN SAFE TRAFFIC
Salem (Special) Bend. La
Grande, Burns and Myrtle Point
held first places In the four di
visions of the 1941 Oregon cities
traffic safety contest at the end
of July, it was announced by
the secretary of state's office.
Bend, leading the first divi
sion comprised of cities of 10,
000 and over, has held first place
in its division every month this
year. It is the first year Bend
has been entered in this division,
moving Into the group on the
basis of Its population increase
as shown In the 1940 census.
Klamath Falls was in second
place and Salem third.
In the second division, cities
of from 5 000 to 10 000 popula
tion, La Giande was followed by
Marshfield in second place and
Oregon City in third. In the
third division Burns was first,
Roseburg second and Tillamook
third. Myrtle Point, Union and
Woodburn held the top three
positions in the fourth division.
Standings are based on the Im
provement in the traffic accident
situation this year as compared
with the average accident pict
ure for the past three years for
each city. Winners in the con
test will be given highway
p'aques to be erected alongside
the highway entrances to the
cities.

pital In Portland Wednesday of last
week. Is making a satisfactory re

Nonhtqh School District Budget
NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that a Budget Committee of the
Nonhlgh School District of Jackson County, State of Oregon, at
a meeting of said Committee held on the 15th day of September,
1941, prepared an estimate In detail of the amount of money
proposed to be expended by said Nonhlgh School District for
all purposes during the fiscal school year benlnnina Julv 1. 1041.
and ending June 30, 1042, and an estimate in detail of the prob
able receipts of said Nonhlgh School District from all sources for
the school year 1041-1042. The Board of said Nonhlgh School Dis
trict has fixed the 18th day of October at the hour of 10 a.m. at the
Court House in Medford, Oregon, as the time and place at which
said estimates may be discussed with the Board of said Nonhlgh
School D'strict, at which time and place any and all persons Inter
ested will be heard for 01 against said tax levy, or anv Dart thereof.
That said estimates and attached

open to the inspection of all persons interested therein, and the

Many Auto Deaths

has been the chief contributing
factor In the driving actions of
74 drivers involved in fatal ac
cidents In Oregon th.lt yeer, ac
cording to reports from the state
traffic safety division. In addi
tion to these fatalities, speed too
great for conditions has been a
factor in many other crashes in
the state.
Automotive engineers have
discovered that high driving
speeds throw a heavy extra bur
den on a car's motor to over
come wind resistance, the divi
sion said. At 80 miles an hour,
wind resistance takes an extra
48 horsepower as compared to
only six extra horsepower to
overcome wind resistance at a
speed f 40 miles an hour. Hence.
In addition to causing accidents,
high speed puts additional strain
on motors and thus uses more
gasoline.

destroyers, brought to 10 the

best monthly performance since
the start of the two-ocean con
struction program.
