FOR 2-WEEK STAY 4CO Men, 80 Officers to Camp at Elks Ground Planes to Base at Port The 20th pursuit group of the army air corps at Hamilton field, San Rafael, Cal., will move Into Medford by truck and ear tomor row and take possession of the Elki picnic grounds for two weeks of maneuvers, class work, drills, rest and recreation. The column is expected to arrive about 4 p. m. Col. Ira C. Eaker commanding Hamilton field will be in command of the camp, There will be about 80 officers and 400 men in the camp. The camp has been set up by an advanced echelon of three of ficers and 75 men who arrived Tuesday and established a dis tributing point unit at the Pres- cott CCC camp, Capt. Marvin Sledge being in charge. Planes to Participate Half a dozen planes operating out of the municipal airport will engage in the maneuvers, said Capt. C. P. Lessig who helped arrange for the camp site and has been ferrying back and forth by plane between Hamil ton field and Medford. The ma neuver phase of the work will be done each morning between 8 and 10 or 10:30, Capt. Lessig related. The remainder of the day will be devoted to class problems, testing of communica tions and drills, including pistol practice. Recreational activities will give the men a change from the strenuous training they have been undergoing at Hamilton field, It was explained. Col. Eaker will travel by car part way with the group due tomorrow. He will stop In Stock ton, Cal., to give a morning ad dress at a school ceremony and then continue to Medford, Capt. Lessig said. Ma). Jesse Auton will also take part in the camp. HIT-RUNNER CONFESSES TO SILENCE CONSCIENCE Portland, Ore., July 10. OT) Admitting that his conscience bothered him, Martin Jensen, Jr. 28, Portland meatcutter, surren dered to Deputy Sheriff Holver Christoffersen today and con fessed he drove the automobile that killed Fritz Neumiller, 75, dairy worker, June 15. He was charged with falling to stop at the scene of a fatal accident and released by Judge Lowell Mundorff on his own recognizance. Big Applegate, July 10. (Spl) Development of a cinna bar mine in the Steamboat re gion owned by Val Haskins and Paul Sydel is in its second week of progress, it was learned here. Phil Davie and George Malone of San Francisco are operating the mine, with E. W. Kubli of this community as overseer. The claim Is located on Brush creek back of the Dawson ranch. A crew of three men Is en gaged In driving a tunnel and shaft to determine whether the amount of ore would Justify a retort. Prospects so far are said to be good. The local workmen include Ike Akers, Bill Mitchell and Frank Ortman, Moscow, July 10. (P)S. A. Lozovsky, vice commissar for foreign affairs, said he had heard of German reports that Russia was negotiating for the sale of Kamchatka and the Far Eastern maritime province to the United States but declared these were groundless and spread "doubt less to create friction between the United States and Japan." (The Kamchatka peninsula and the maritime province, con taining Vladivostok, are the easternmost provinces of Soviet Siberia. Some Japanese imper ialists have called for their ac quisition by Japan.) L 4 Rome Notified Rome, July 10 (P) The Uni ted States embassy notified the Italian government today that it expected prompt lifting of Italy's ban on the departure of United States citizens from this country. Washington, July 10. (P) Rear Admiral S. M. Robinson, chief of the navy's bureau of ships, disclosed today that by 1943 the United States would be producing 100 destroyers a year. Testifying before the senate defense investigating commit tee, Koblnson said the navy s ship-building program was "four or five months" ahead of other phases of the preparedness program. Robinson said It was "abso lutely essential" to speed up the production of needed materials in order to maintain the present shipbuilding pace.
