Doughty, Sr., hag puttered around with cas tor beans for the past six years. Now that castor oil, a necessity In the aviation, haa been put on the priorities list it appears that Doughty is going to turn his hobby into an aid for the de fense program. Doughty, who raises castor beans in his time off from his work as railroad agent and as chairman of the local selective service board, has developed a sturdy little plant called called "Doughty Eleven" which bids to compete with castor plants from other countries. Doughty Eleven now is six generations old and analysis by several concerns shows that Doughty' hybrid plant averages at least 50 percent oil, as good a bean Imported from South America, Cuba and India. (U.P) Cana da's answer to the wartime housing-shortage problem Is be ing rushed to completion here in the form- of prefabricated homes which are constructed rapidly, rented reasonably and may be removed when emer gency need for them ends. In a manner similar to the rising of boom towns in the old west years ago, a wartime vil lage of 234 homes is rapidly taking shape on the outskirts of this Canadian border commu nity for the convenience of de fense workers. Just 12 days after the first carload of lumber was deliv ered, eight houses had been erected. Providing lumber is available, the entire group should be finished within three months. The Fort Erie project la the furthest advanced of (cores of similar efforts started by War time Housing, Ltd., to provide needed housing for the sudden influx of war-industry workers in various parts of the do minion. In the local project, Wartime Housing, Ltd., took over 380 lots from Fort Erie and will retain title to them at least until the end of the emergency. At that time. If local home owners find it too difficult to rent their homes, the new units will be dismantled and stored or shipped elsewhere. ASPEN FORESTS SERVE DEFENSE International Falls, Minn. (U.R) Mlnnarsota' vast aspen forests are being utilized in national defense industry with construc tion of a "pilot plant" for the commercial production of alpha cellulose, basic raw material for the manufacture of munitions, rayon, celluloid, plastic and similar products. Construction of the plant, sponsored by the Northwest Re search foundation, follows (even years of scientific research at the University of Minnesota In the utilization of aspen wood, great tracts of which lie lo northern Minnesota. R. H. M. Robinson, president of the paper company, predicts that within a few months "man ufacture of alpha cellulose on a small scale will begin and pres ent plans call for the production of approximately 500 pounds of the cellulose pulp a day." Medical science has achieved another pinnacle. The surgeons now can treat serious head wounds-even case of fractured skulls and injuries to the brain which were con sidered incurable only IS years ago. An Injured skull formerly meant early death or disability for life. Today, hundreds of peo ple whose skulls were injured In air-raids are walking the Lon don streets cured. The success has been achieved through the hands of the neuro surgeon. The greatest of these surgeons is working in London. He is tall, bearded man with the deli cate hands of an artist.
