LEGION WILL GIVE DANCE JULY 9 FOR CITY'S SOLDIERS Medford post of the American Legion will hold a benefit dance at Oriental Garden July 9 for this city's own soldier boys of Company A, 186th Infantry, and headquarters company, third battalion, who will be encamped at the old fairgrounds from July 2 to July 11. The soldiers will be en route to their station at Camp Murray, Wash., from maneuvers In California. The post decided upon the dance at Its meeting in the arm ory last night at which E. W. Winkle was installed as com mander for the 1941-42 period. The public was invited to the dance. The soldiers and their partners will be guests of the post. There will be about 179 men and eight officers in the two army units, formerly Med ford's national guard units. Winkle Installed Mr. Winkle was Installed by Lloyd A. Williamson, retiring commander who was vested with the authority to be instal ling officer because of his posi tion as district commander, an appointment he received when MaJ. H. J. Meiring, then district commander, was called to active army duty. Members of the post felicitat ed Mr. Williamson for his cap able handling of the organiza tion during the past year, con sidered one of the most serious periods in American Legion his tory because of the necessity of organizing for civilian defense in the face of the increasing in ternational emergency. Mr. Wil liamson was lauded for his faith fulness to duty and thanked for the personal sacrifices he made to carry out the American Le gion's defense mission. Other new officers of the post are: First vice commander, Ray E. Wright; second vice comman der, Virgil Ballantyne; adjutant, Fritz Nissen; chaplain, Alfred J. Anderson; executive committee, R. R. Ebel. Joseph Fliegel, Earl York, James Collins and Elmer Wilson. BACKED BY BRIEF Portland, June 20. (&) United Airlines has filed a brief supporting the report of a civil aeronautics board examiner ap proving regular plane stops at Eugene, Salem and Bellingliam, Wash. W. R. Thlgpen. district traffic manager, said today a protest had also been filed against the board's decision not to permit air mail-passenger-express ser vice to Klamath Falls. MYRTLE KELSOE Services for Myrtle Kelsoe, 83, who passed away at her home near the Agate school this Thursday, will be held In the Conger funeral parlors Satur day at 2 p. m. with interment in Central Tolnt cemetery. A complete obituary will be published later. HE FOSTER RITES Services for Walter V. Foster were held In Conger funeral parlors Wednesday afternoon with Rev. Miles BrownriRg of ficiating. Interment was In Phoenix cemetery. Mr. Foster passed away at his home near Phoenix Sunday eve ning after several months' ill ness. He was born In Alabama. Feb. 9. 1861, and for the past 21 years had made his home in Jackson county. Weather bureau reports in dicated partly cloudy tonight and Friday with showers to night followed by broken cloud iness. Total June precipitation up to 4:30 a. m. today was 1.37 Inches as compared to .51 for the same period last year. Re ports showed excess precipita tion for June to date to be .72 inch. County Judge J. B. (Blln) Coleman reports this is the wet test June he has seen in a long time, though ha experienced wetter ones many years ago. Other old settlers say the same thing. William Bates recalls a Fourth of July, 40 years ago or more, when it snowed. The forest service reports Dutch man's peak in the Applegate had snow the first of this week. County Agent Robert G. Fow ler said he had no report on any grain beaten down by the rain last night, but suspected some was. A number of fields of barley and wheat In the Ap plegate, Table Rock and other sections of the county have suf fered. A few warm days would straighten some of It up. It is said. Considerable hay was soaked by the rains of the past two weeks, and In many fields the second growth is up to the top of the stacks. The county agent said he would make no esti mate on the extent of the hay damage, but thought all hay could be used.
