SUNDAY, JUKE 15, 1941 ACADEMY WINNER IN UNUSUAL ROLE AS NORMAL GIRL The new Bette Davis picture. "The Great Lie," opens a three day run today at the Craterian theatre, with the two-time Aca demy award winner again mak ing a bid for top honors of the year, according to all advance reports. A modern story of a woman very much In love and willing to fight all odds to keep the man she loves. "The Great Lie" has George Brent, Mary Astor, Lu rile Watson, Hattie McDanlel, Russell Hicks, Thurston Hall and Jerome Cowan In the principal supporting roles. In the picture, Bette Davis does a right-about-face from the roles she has been playing re cently. There isn't a trace of meanness about her. She is a perfectly normal American girl, a gay and usually happy person who chooses to lead a simple life on her farm in Maryland All the feminine skullduggery which enters the plot is carried on by Mary Astor. who returns to the screen to give the year's surprise performance. She is a very sophisticated woman of the world, a concert pianist who rides the top crest of cafe so ciety. Brent plays an aviator and explorer, In love with Bette but attracted to Mary during his inebriated moments. It is during one of these moments that he marries Mary, and thus starts the drama to startling de velopments which wind up in a thrilling climax. Special Bill Craterian Wednesday FINISH ADD! E Diamond Lake, June 14. (Spl.) Work on the second story of Diamond lake lodge terminat ed last week. The addition cost approximately $10,000. The new story facilitates ac commodating of people in the lodge building. The ten new rooms are of knotty pine finish and furnished with the latest in Oregon Trail furniture. Fishing at the lake has been good the last week with limit catches being taken every day. Largest fish recorded to date was a 10-pound rainbow taken on cluster eggs. As the added screen attraction on the Craterian theatre pro gram Wednesday only, Robert Cummings, Ruth Hussey and Nigel Bruce are featured In "Free and Easy," the romantic comedy of a couple of luxury loving crooks who are caught in their own meshes. Judith Anderson and C. Aubrey Smith are also in the cast. Topping the program will be "Rhapsody In Rhythm" on the stage with a cast of 20 people, including singers, dancers, nov elty acts and beautiful chorines bringing to Medford the first "in the flesh" entertainment shown here for a long time. The program will show one day only, matinee and evening, at no raise In prices. "Sign of the Wolf" Has Two Dog Stars In Leading Roles Two outstanding dog stars of Hollywood have leading roles in the punch-packed Jack London story, "Sign of the Wolf," play ing today and Monday at the Rialto theatre. Both dogs are descendants of the famous Strongheart. Based on the popular author's That Spot," the film Is a story of the fox fur industry of the Canadian wilds. Two prize winning Alsatian shepherds are loosed in the backwoods when the plane carrying their mistress and her colored servant crashes in a raging blizzard. One of the dogs. Smoky, deserts the stricken plane, and roams the woods until he is taken by a pair of renegade trappers, who train him to rob valuable pelts from nearby fur farms. The other dog. Shadow, although in jured, hobbles for miles to the cabin of Michael Whalen and young Darryl Hickman to obtain relief for his stricken mistress and her servant Grace Bradley and Mantan Moreland. Whalen revives the girl and a romance soon develops between the two, which is threatened with destruction when Shadow is accused of a series of fur thefts actually committed by Smoky under the direction of the renegades. The story rushes toward a climax in typical Jack London fashion, with several ' unusual twists contributing to the novel ending. Defense Bond Sales Washington, June 14. Tom Sawyer Re-Issue Coming 'The Adventures of Tom Saw yer," the all-technicolor picturi zation of the Mark Twain classic of boyhood which was such a great hit a few years ago, will be back at the Rialto theatre for three days starting Tuesday, as the latest of their "re-issue" hits of yesterday. Tommy Kelly portrays the part of Tom, with Jackie Moran as Huckleberry Finn. Others in the cast include Walter Brennan as Muff Potter, May Robson as Aunt Polly, Victor Jory an In jun Joe, Ann Gillis as Becky Thatcher. They were asked to cancel the advances "to aid in resisting in flation." The request was made In tele grams to the presidents of the Ford Motor company, the Chrys ler corporation, the Nash-Kelvi-nator corporation, the Studcbak er corporation and the Hudson Motor car company. "Recent price advances," Hen derson said, "are inconsistent with favorable earnings position of the industry as a whole dur ing recent periods." An Interesting patient now at the home Is Mrs. Tilda Sullivan, 85, of Medford vicinity, affec tionately known as "Grandma." Mrs. Sullivan and her family resided in Jacksonville 40 years ago.
