The thought is noble but in- the present messed up state of Man's thinking, is not apt to get results. VESTERDAY afternoon the Mail-Tribune pre- dieted the "Bismarck's" number was up. This morning the "Bismarck," with Swastika flag flying and guns firing went down with all on board. So the score in the north Atlantic is evened up, the Bismarck for the Hood, and Britannia again rules the waves! ("We told you so !") ee.ee WELL, Britannia rules in theory at least. But when one goes across the map to Crete the picture isn't so reassuring. For apparently consider ing the victory over the Bismarck a proper time to re lease some bad news, the British Admiralty admits: "The loss of two cruisers, the Gloucester and FIJI; four destroyers, the Juno, Greyhound, Kelly and Kashmir; the' damaging of two battleships and several mora cruisers." Not so hot for Britannia's rule off the coast of Greece, and an outstanding air force. BUT equally significant is But for the planes ( American made, by the way) on the British fleet's airplane carrier the Bismarck would have escaped, for British naval planes spotted the Nazi dreadnaught and a torpedo plane inflicted the first mortal wound, then executed the "coup de grace." Which adds up to whatf Just to this: AIRPOWER IN MODERN WAR IS SUPREME, NOT ONLY ON LAND, BUT ON THE SEA. The nation, or group of nations, that gain a permanent control of the air will win this war, and as long as such control endures will control the world. Every victory Germany has gained thus far has been primarily due to superior airpower. Every defeat Britain has suffered has been pri marily due to the lack of it Britain's greatest war achievement, the successful embarkation at Dunkirk, was directly due to her tem porary control of the air above the English channel. r " e e SO at least to this department the lesson is so plain hat avon tVinso whn nin mav fPArl. Yet "we the people" are today rushing the con struction of a two-ocean navy, spending as much as $100,000,000 on a single battleship which this de struction of the Bismarck shows, can be sunk by a single torpedo plane costing about one-tenth of one per cent as much ! WE are not contending a two-ocean navy isn't de sirable. Nor a large and well-trained army with guns, tanks, parachute troops and what not. But we are contending this World War No. 2 has clearly demonstrated that all arms, both on land and oea, are supplementary to If this war is to be won, the democracies of the world must gain control of "Mr. X"Bobs Up Again! WELL, Hitler MAY be beaten before snow flies, anything in this mad world CAN happen, -but we opine it won't be through any blockade, or through dominant sea power. With all Europe in his grasp, and with Russia cooperating as far as raw materials are concerned, Hitler is right when he says there will be no repetition of 1918, as far as Germany is concerned. There won't be. In fact, if Hitler is beaten In 1941, it will be from behind, not on any of the He murht be shot by some fanatical zealot for ex ample, or an internal revolt army leaders might- get him. But until a major defeat is suffered, and Germany awakens to the fact she CAN'T win, anything of this sort isn t likely to happen. lOREOVER one important point should not be overlooked by Mr. X in all his calculations, or by others similarly inclined. Let him remember that Hitler opened World War No. 2 with a defensive alliance with Soviet Russia. Before he will risk defeat, won't he try to end the war, with Russia's red army fighting beside him? e e e 1E aren't maintaining an offensive alliance with Stalin is certain. We are maintaining that Herr Hitler would rather have Stalin in Berlin than Winston Churchill. And rather than risk another 1918, if the going DOES get tough, won't he join hands with the Kremlin? ""THIS possibility, at least, has been bothering this department ever since September 1st, 1939. We have never believed Hitler could WIN. STRAIN IN The bowling green being too wet after the rain to play, I was Juggling some bookcases full of books the other day when a med ical friend dropr-ed la. "I wouldn't take a chance like that if you gave me the books," he re marked. "What c h a n c e?" I asked. "Why. man, you might easily rupture your self lifting such heavy things as those medical books by the case," he opined. So I opened one of the tomes and read him a paragraph. It was the latest and best work on the subject "Hernia," by Leigh F. Wat son, M. D.. second ed., Mosby Company, St. Louis, 1938, and this is what I read for the bene fit of my medical friend I quote it here for the benefit of thou sands of readers who have evinc ed a similar misunderstanding in letters concerning nernia: 'Nothing Is more erroneous than the general belief among some physicians and the laity that muscular effort is the cause of hernia." (Other terms for hernia perhaps more familiar '.o the laity are rupture and breach.) 'The popular idea of the modus operandi is that a sud den or long-continued muscular effort, in some unexplainable manner, causes a pressure on the abdominal contents and this is turn forces, a knuckle or loop of intestine to m a k e a passage through the solid abdominal wall, regardless of the intricate network of muscles and fascia effectively arranged to prevent just such an accident. "How anyone can seriously be lieve that a soft, velvety, col lapsed coil of intestine can sud denly assume the hardess of a cold chisel and accomplish some thing the human finger cannot do is beyond my comprehension. It is a well-known fact that the finger cannot be forced through the internal inguinal ring if there is no empty sac opening into the abdominal cavity." My medical accomplice, who has done many hernia operations but, I fear, has never mastered the technique of the ambulant treatment, agreed at once that such an effort as lifting a case of heavy medical books sudden ly brings great pressure upon the abdominal contents and that, THE CAPITAL PARADE By JOSEPH ALSOP and ROBERT KINTNER fOontlnueC Prom Psge One) According to a member of this group, the Tuesday address "will be more the president's own than any other." To save time and clarify his own think ing, the president's practice in writing speeches has always been to gather together a large number of memoranda and much factual data and re-dic tate from this information ac cording to his own ideas. The White House, of course, has been flooded with suggestions and as usual the president has requested a few friends to as sist him. But, again according to this official, the president this time has made a point of developing his ideas independ ently from the views of his lead ing subordinates. Then too, it is difficult to feel sure about the president's attitude because of the rapidity with which events are happen ing abroad. The president prev iously postponed his report to the nation partly becnuse he did not feel well, but also because he was not certain on the ex tent of the collaboration be tween France and Germany. LIFTING he argued, would be sufficient to cause nernia if there were congenital weakness of muscles and fasciae In the hernial region Frankly, I thought that last con dition a quibble or equivocation, although it is the sort of argu ment or reasoning one must con done in what we insist is med ical science. For that matter such a weak ness or developmental defect congenital (that is, present al birth) is the fundamental cause of all hernias, in the opinion of most anatomists and surgeons. In litfing the books I had no thought of hernia. What I took care to avoid was sacro-iliac strain or sprain, and with that purpose in mind I did not lean down to lift the books I held my back straight and bent my knees or squatted. This is a precaution everyone should take when lifting a weight from ground or floor use your legs and not your back for the effort. QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS Hate a Hahy Book. Late last week when the presi dent began to work on a final draft, he gave the impression to visitors of a principal desire to clarify the war issue in the minds of the people. Their plea was for "clarification" accompanied by action. see EVEN with this background of uncertainty over the presi dent's decision, it is still im portant to know, of a report recently made by one of his most Intimate advisers on for eign policy. After a tour of all sections of the country, includ ing the traditionally isolationist Middle West, this man returned to Washington recently with very definite conclusions on the state of public opinion which may well have an effect on the president. His conclusions were approximately as follows: One, that the president now has a stronger hold on the country than at any time dur ing the last eight years. The great majority of the people are both willing and anxious to follow his leadership, and in general they have confidence in his judgment on foreign af fairs. Two, that in all sections of the country, the average citi zen is confused and uncertain. He has no authoritative and ac curate conception of the dan gerous war position of the Brit ish: he is not sure of the ef fectiveness of any steps that this country can take to change the balance of the war; and he is ignorant of the dangers to this country If these steps are not taken. Three, that if the country Is fully informed on the world situation, it will be ready for prompt and decisive action. But if the situation is not explained with boldness and an alternate program suggested, then the disunion will growi each day that this is delayed. In broad outline, this is also the view of the best informed and most important officials in Washington. While they recog nize the dangers to the presi dent's leadership if he embarks on new policies without the country united behind, they also are even more convinced that if a frank appraisal of war is made, the president will be in a position to direct the nation into a genuinely effective pro gram of active aid to the Brit ish. They may be wide of the truth, as often they have been. As these words are written, the German claims are undenied by the British, but the British may have military reasons for keep ing quiet. It is too early to draw defin ite conclusions. We can only guess from confusing dis patches. INTEREST iq the eastern Med iterranean sea fighting arises from the NATURE of It What we want to know is how the British fleet stood up against German air attack. THE battleship Hood, the pride of the British navy, wai sunk bv a German battleship. That might have been the result, as the British claim, of a lucky shot. Such things do happen in naval warfare. If the British navy in the east ern Mediterranean has been dis astrously battered from the AIR, it will be something else entirely. IN Berlin, German Grand Ad miral Raeder, speaking of convoying American supplies to Britain, says: "I can only echo the view of President Roosevelt that convoys mean shooting." Elaborating, he says: "Since the nature of cargoes of convoyed ships, according to American admissions, would be established from the very be ginning as contraband, resort to this type of convoy system would not be neutral in the sense of international or Amer ican treaties, but an OPEN WAR ACT and a bare, unpro voked attack. "German naval forces there fore would be justified in tak ing measures against these con voyed carriers according to the law of sea warfare and would by exercise of these rights have to REPULSE WITH ARMS if necessary any hindrance even against American warships. (Admiral Raeder's bellicose statement, it is interesting to note, is contained in an inter view granted to Domei, the JAPANESE news agency.
