By Frank Jenkins THE battle of Crete is still (at noon Friday) in doubt. Hopeful "informed sources" in London and Cairo picture the advantage on the island as slow ly turning to the British side. The German parachutists are reported to have been driven nut of all but one foothold. Naval landings of German troops and equipment are re ported to have been prevented. But still the nazis float down from the skies. IF you're thinking ahead, in stead of merely looking at today, you'll watch with keen est interest the battle between the German air force and the British navy that is raging all around Crete. The Germans assert that In this struggle two British battle ships, 10 cruisers and many de stroyers have been sunk or damaged. We can't, of course, believe these German reports unhesi tatingly. We can only wait and see. But if they should happen to be true, this will be a signifi cant moment in the history of war. ADMIRAL Darlan (now appar ently the his man of France, said to be a British hater) says in a statement is sued In Vichy: . "Hitler has not asked France for her fleet In CURRENT ne gotiations, and I WILL NEVER HAND IT OVER." Take that for what it is worth if anything. ! IF you want to know why Hit-, ler Is battling so desperately for the small island of Crete, go back 20-odd centuries into history. 1 When Alexander started for. Egypt (where Hitler Is headed) he had to hold up his world-; conquering expedition for seven 1 months while he besieged and , ultimately took by storm the tiny island city of Tyre (less lis headed for Iraq and Egypt, than a mile off the eastern with Syria as a way point, and f Mediterranean shore). he dare, not leave strong Brit. The Germans I have staked their hopes on the . . . airship. Around the relative merits of the airship and the warship a mighty controversy has raged. It has been so far a theoretical controversy. There are signs( badly cloud ed by censorship) that in the historic waters of the eastern Mediterranean it is being put to a practical test. That is the real reason why the world is watching breath lessly the battle of Crete. Application for loan on dentin) properties are being prompt ly acted upon and loans are closed without delay.
