JUNE SO. 1940. l SHERWOOD'S HIT IN MODERN FORM OPENS RUN TODAY Lucile Watson, Virginia Field in Brilliant Cast 1940 Setting Is Featured. "Oomph Girl" In Brilliant "Torrid Zone" Cast Vivien Llgh and Robert Tay lor form- the outstanding ro mantic team of 1940 in "Water loo Bridge," their new starring film which comes today to the Craterian theatre for an en-i gagement of three days. In her first American screen appearance since she won the Academy Award for her per formance as Scarlett O'Hara in "Gone With the Wind." Miss Leigh has a no less romantic but more tender and sympa thetic role In the new film as a ballet dancer who falls in love with a dashing young of ficer she meets on Waterloo bridge during an air raid. As the officer, Taylor has one of the finest roles of his career, a characterization which re quires him to age from 25 to 48. Their breathless love story and the effects of war on their ro mance and lives is graphically told in the film. Giving the picture more time liness and vitality, the Robert E. Sherwood stage success has been adapted to open in London of 1940 and then turns back the pages of history to 1917 for Its major theme. Featured in the notable sup porting cast are such screen favorites as Lucile Watson, Vir ginia Field, Maria Ouspenskaya and C. In the featured supporting cast are Andy Devine, Helen Vinson, An exciting comedy drama, set against the tropical back ground of the South American banana country, "Torrid Zone" shows Cagney and O'Brien as the hard-boiled plantation bosses for a big fruit company. Ann Sheridan is an American torch singer who goes to the "torrid tone" to cash in on her talents as a singer and card sharp. As an added attraction on the same program, the Craterian will have a new Walt Disney cartoon in Technicolor, "Bill Posters," featuring Donald Duck and The Goof. New Charlie Chan Thriller Coming John Garfield and Ann Shirley Stars Of Rialto's Drama Topping the program at the New Rialto theatre for today and Monday is "Saturday's Children," dealing with the every-day problems portrayed by down-to-earth characters. Starring Ann Shirley and John Garfield, plus a pleasant group of performers that include Claude Rains, Roscoe Karns, Lee Patrick, Dennie Moore and many others, the picture is to quote a familiar phrase as American as apple pie. A charming and wistful drama, with plenty of comedy to liven things up throughout. "Saturday's Children" is the story of an average boy and girl who meet in a business office and fall in love. The eventual proposal is effected af ter the girl succumbs to the wiles of a hardened older sister, and coerces the boy into mar riage forcing him to give up a promising future in the Philippines. As the "Saturday's Children," John Garfield and Ann Shirley are said to give further evi i dence of their talents and to make an ideal screen team Claude Rains has a semi-comedy role as the girl's father; Dennie Moore plays a "there's one in every office" type of secretary commuting daily from the Jungles of darkest Bronx; Roscoe Karns is the brother-in-law whose only sin in life is a flat wallet; and Lee Patrick is Anne's older sister. "Pop Always Pays," with funnyman Leon Errol In the title role as the father who promises to double . his daugh ter's fiancee's bank account when it reaches a thousand dol lars and finds himself in hot water when it actually does happen, much to his surprise, brings added laughs to the screen. More than a routine inspec tion of company operations in this city, Mr. Barnes and Mr. Davis came to Medford to sec the newly established tire re treading department just in stalled in the building of the local Firestone Auto Supply and Service store at Ninth street and Riverside avenue. This department, replete with latest equipment for retreading passenger car and truck tires of all sizes, has been added at an estimated cost of $10,000.
