"Oomph Girl" In Brilliant "Torrid Zone" Cast
Vivien Llgh and Robert Tay
lor form- the outstanding ro
mantic team of 1940 in "Water
loo Bridge," their new starring
film which comes today to the
Craterian theatre for an en-i
gagement of three days.
In her first American screen
appearance since she won the
Academy Award for her per
formance as Scarlett O'Hara in
"Gone With the Wind." Miss
Leigh has a no less romantic
but more tender and sympa
thetic role In the new film as
a ballet dancer who falls in
love with a dashing young of
ficer she meets on Waterloo
bridge during an air raid.
As the officer, Taylor has one
of the finest roles of his career,
a characterization which re
quires him to age from 25 to 48.
Their breathless love story and
the effects of war on their ro
mance and lives is graphically
told in the film.
Giving the picture more time
liness and vitality, the Robert
E. Sherwood stage success has
been adapted to open in London
of 1940 and then turns back
the pages of history to 1917
for Its major theme.
Featured in the notable sup
porting cast are such screen
favorites as Lucile Watson, Vir
ginia Field, Maria Ouspenskaya
and C. Aubrey Smith.

An exciting comedy drama,
set against the tropical back
ground of the South American
banana country, "Torrid Zone"
shows Cagney and O'Brien as
the hard-boiled plantation
bosses for a big fruit company.
Ann Sheridan is an American
torch singer who goes to the
"torrid tone" to cash in on her
talents as a singer and card
sharp.
As an added attraction on the
same program, the Craterian
will have a new Walt Disney
cartoon in Technicolor, "Bill

and The Goof.
New Charlie Chan Thriller Coming
John Garfield and
Ann Shirley Stars
Of Rialto's Drama
Topping the program at the
New Rialto theatre for today
and Monday is "Saturday's
Children," dealing with the
every-day problems portrayed
by down-to-earth characters.
Starring Ann Shirley and John
Garfield, plus a pleasant group
of performers that include
Claude Rains, Roscoe Karns,
Lee Patrick, Dennie Moore and
many others, the picture is to
quote a familiar phrase as
American as apple pie.
A charming and wistful
drama, with plenty of comedy
to liven things up throughout.
"Saturday's Children" is the
story of an average boy and
girl who meet in a business
office and fall in love. The
eventual proposal is effected af
ter the girl succumbs to the
wiles of a hardened older sister,
and coerces the boy into mar
riage forcing him to give up
a promising future in the Philippines.
As the "Saturday's Children,"
John Garfield and Ann Shirley
are said to give further evi
i dence of their talents and to
make an ideal screen team
Claude Rains has a semi-comedy
role as the girl's father;
Dennie Moore plays a "there's
one in every office" type of
secretary commuting daily from
the Jungles of darkest Bronx;
Roscoe Karns is the brother-in-law
whose only sin in life is a
flat wallet; and Lee Patrick is
Anne's older sister.
"Pop Always Pays," with
funnyman Leon Errol In the
title role as the father who
promises to double . his daugh
ter's fiancee's bank account
when it reaches a thousand dol
lars and finds himself in hot
water when it actually does
happen, much to his surprise,
brings added laughs to the
screen. Adele Pearce, Dennis
O'Keefe and Walter Catlett are
featured.
