MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE. MEDFORD- OREGON'. THURSDAY. JUNE 27. 1940. PAGE FIVE NEW QUARTZ MILL SET UP AT APPLEGATE MINE Fifty Men to Be Employed by Tree Mining Co., Near Upper Appiegate Grange Meteorological Report Big Appiegate, June 27. (Spl.) A buzzing little colony of activity has sprung up on a deso late hillside in the Upper Apple- gate section, where approxv mately SO men soon will be ex tracting quartz rock from the earth and crushing it for its gold content, according to W. G. Wright of Medford, assayer for the Tree Mining company, new ly formed concern with a cap! talization of $20,000. A 123-ton ball quartz mill is being brought from Grants Pass this week, which will be in charge of Don Marvin of M.-d-ford, and when other equipment is assembled, some of which is already on hand, it is expected that operations will be in full blast in two weeks. Rich Ledge A quartz ledge, assaying $14 per ton, is penetrated with a 60-foot tunnel into a mountain side, and after extension of the tunnel 100 feet further, it is ex pected that the entire thousand foot mountain will be blasted for disintegration of its ore in the mill. The Tree company, of which ft. E. Millard of Oregon City is president, is a self-owned con cern wherein all of its employes, who come principally from Ore gon City and Clackamas county, own a unit in the mine, which is comprised of individual claims on location covering 200 acres. The new enterprise is situated about 4 miles up the river from Upper Appiegate grange hall, and about 300 yards from the road. A typical mining camp has come into being there, even to log cabins, music, and danc ing. Nine fir log cottages have been built for the families in volved, which include about SO persons at the present time. All of the men are skilled workmen, many millwrights and carpen ters. 400-Foot Tramway A tramway 400 feet long has been built from the tunnel mouth to the framework where the mill will be set up, and a rock crusher already is on. the site. A 100 horsepower semi Diesel engine also will be in use, and a small air compressor, now in use for drilling in the tunnel, will be replaced with a 8-drill compressor. The assayer's office and mill will be elec trically equipped from a plant soon to be installed. The name of the company in itself is typical of the method of Forecasts atediord and vicinity: Fair tonight and Friday, rtsinf temperature on Friday. A fir tree, uprooted in the years past, disclosed the ledge, which was first discovered by Mr. Millard last September. Assay Proves High "Discoveries like that often come from a gopher or badger hole where a little dirt is thrown up that people don't have to dig themselves," Mr. Wright philoso phized. We have a spring here, the richest in the country," he continued. "It was a test hole. and the ore assayed $105 a ton by my calculations. The boys thought I was spoofing, so we sent it to Portland, and the assay came considerably higher. The spring, rising in volcanic mud, furnishes a good water sup ply for the camp. Both Mr. Wright and Mr. Mil lard, long experienced in the mining field have studied thf geological formations for miles surrounding their claims, and be lieve that their enterprise will bring valuable returns. The fact that Bald Mountain, lying east of their location, is bare of vege tation, shows that gas formations exist in the mountain, which usually signifies underground de posits below, Mr. Wright explained. Springfield, 111. (U.R) A one mile section of a new type high way pavement composition in corporating the use of brick, concrete and steel will be tested here this summer with engineers throughout the na tion watching the experiment for revolutionary possibilities. For nine years the Poston Brick Company, of Springfield has been experimenting with the new paving design on the theory that present concrete and brick roads are inadequate to withstand the constant pound ing they are subjected to night and day. Several years ago the com pany built a test section in its plant and state highways divis ion engineers attempted to break it down with test trucks but were unsuccessful. And now, nine years later, testing equipment is still unable to destroy it. Recently the company was awarded a contract by the Il linois highways division to con struct a one-mile stretch of the pavement to test further the de sign under heavy, fast moving traffic. Work on it will start early next month. The new pavement is differ ent from concrete or brick com positions generally used throughout the country. It is a heavy-duty, smooth-riding, non-skid pavement according to its inventors with a brick concrete surface and with "checkerboard" steel reinforce ment. The company claims for the new material a long life stability and says its cost compares with all-concrete construction, while cost of old style brick roads is avoided. The new composition is made up in bricks, square, not oblong as the old-style ones. They are laid on a cushion of sand with steel reinforcement rods be tween each row of bricks. The space between the bricks is filled with concrete. I i I ft, M i r.-- TO WED Weddlnr July 13 at Southampton, L.
