(JP) Silver ton and Woodburn, Marion county'! second and third cities, have gained In population the past 10 years, A. R. McCall, district census supervisor, an nounced today. Silverton totaled 292S com pared with 2482 in 1930 and Woodburn jumped from 1875 to 1981. Other figures, the 1949 total being listed first: Stayton, 1068, 797; Hubbard 387, 330; Gervais 332, 254; Mount Angel 1116, 979; Jefferson 415, 591. West Salem, in Polk county, increased from 974 to 1410. SERVICE STATION MAN CONVICTED IN SLAYING Eureka, Calif., June 14. lP) Elmer Soules, Blue Lake ser vice station operator, will be sentenced Monday for second degree murder in the slaying of Wesley Henry, Korbel cowboy, last Feb. 11. A Jury found Soules guilty after seven hours' deliberation last night. sv -- a ELSIE the harden coo, if IT'S "BoidtiCS- IT'S COr TO BE GOOD WEATHER IS IDEAL TO FOREST AREAS All Rogue National Camps Are Now Ready for Use Fishing Is at Peak The following recreational bulletin was issued today by Rogue River national forest headquarters: "Ideal weather conditions, with dense shade offering cool restfulness, prevail in the Rogue River national forest. "In the Union Creek ranger district, fishing is approaching the peak. Streams yielding good catches include Flat, Foster, Muir, National, Crater, Cope land, and Bybee creek. The up per Rogue river in the vicinity of Hamaker and below there is also good. Brown flies and small spinners, worms and cluster Kgs are all bringing good re sults. "Good catches of eastern brook trout are being made at Fish lake, mostly by still fish ing. Fourmile lake has been only fair, with both rainbow and silverside trout being taken. Some silversides are also being caught at Lake O' Woods. Fishing in Applegate "Squaw lake has been yield ing good catches. Some catches are also being made in the main Applegate river. It is probably a little early for good iUntng In these lakes and the mosquitoes are pretty bad there now. The main trail to the basin Ukes off at Nichols Creek forest camp, three miles east of Lodge- poie guard station. "All roads In the forest are now open except the Ashland loop, which la closed with anow at Wrangle Gap from the Apple- gate side and at Bull Gap from Ashland. Maintenance crews are working on this road now and ft should be open In week or two. Swimming Popular "Camps throughout the forest have been made ready for use, Swimming is becoming very popular in the Applegate dis trict, while cool shade and many wild flowers are the main at tractions at the higher eleva tions. Rhododendron and wild lilac are now in full bloom. "Serious fire conditions are prevailing earlier than usual this year. Constant vigilance on the part of forest users will be necessary if we are to avoid heavy losses of our natural re sources through forest fires." ASHES DUMPED NEAR IW STRUT GARAGE CAUSE MORNING FIRE Fire early this morning dam aged the side and roof of the frame garage at the Joseph V. Mendrala residence, 304 South Ivy street. Damage was small, Chief Roy Elliott said. Chief Elliott reported that the fire was caused by hot ashes that had been piled up against the garage on the alley side. The live ashes, he said, after smoldering for some time, ignited the side of the garage. There was no one at home when the fire occurred, the chief j stated, a neighbor reporting the b 1 a i e. Firemen answered a ward alarm at 9:44 a. m. It was the second fire in two days attributed to hot ashes. On Wednesday night hot ashes were recorded as the cause of a grass fire at 718 West Jack son boulevard. The chief warned residents to put ashes In metal containers or to wet them down until they were entirely out. He counseled that if care is not used, there is liable to be another epidemic of fires caused by hot ashes. SNELL TO HEAD WITHOUTJJHARGE Southern Oregon College of Education to Enroll Train ees Without Usual Fee Southern Oregon College' of Education, Ashland, June 14. (Spl.) There are still a few positions open for applicants in terested in Civilian Pilot Train ing at the Southern Oregon Col lege of Education, according to Marshall K. Woodell. director of pilot training. Word has been received that the Oregon State Board of Higher Education has ruled that students may register for Civilian Pilot Training with out being required to register at the college or to pay the us ual registration fees. However, requirements as set by the civilian aeronautics au thority stipulate that individu als must have received scholas tic credit for at least one year of college work during the scholastic year of 93!)-40, or possess a degree or graduation certificate from some college or Junior college, or they must have received scholastic credit for at least two years of work in some institution of higher learning. Other personal re quirements are that they must have reached their eighteenth but not their twenty-sixth birth- ; day on or before June 1, 1940, j and must not have held any certificate of private grade or higher. Students will also have to meet physical requirements for a student pilot certificate, j The civilian pilot training course will be given without i charge to all individuals who are recommended and who meet the requirements of the Civilian Aeronautics authority.
