By D wight Houghton A reader remarked a lew days ago that almost too many right and leit turns were made in the motor logs. Such is the un remediable fact. Had these roads In this garden spot of ours, been built recently they would prob ably have been laid out straight as the proverbial string and in planning them thus would have completely spoiled the beauty of these same meander ing by-ways. Those followers who are handicapped with a short memory should now ob serve carefully the few simple directions for the drive which may be termed the South Val ley Loop. Invite your friends, neighbors, and especially visi tors to accompany you on this trip. Starting at Main and River aide, drive east on Main Street, toward Roxy Ann, past the Rogue River Valley Golf club with its unforgettable vista of the South Valley and Siskiyou range. In rapid succession the Leonard Carpenter's orchard and Hillcrest orchard are para lleled on your left. At the far aide of the latter is the first Important right turn. This is two miles out, so follow the sign marked "Hillcrest Koad." With in a short distance a road forks to the left toward Roxy Ann, but this log is South and to the right. In the next several miles you will find many enticing by ways turning off to both sides of this logged path. One of these to the left at the 41 j mile mark la designated as "Coal Mine Road", A genuine coal mine ex ists up there, but your course Is due south and you must carry on. Sight seekers who enjoy the thrill of an early morning trip will surely revel in the beauty of the dewey freshness of the landscape and of the unfolding wild flowers adding Just the right dash of color here and there among the fields and orch ards of variegated greens. Even the new mown hay raked sym metrically into neat cocks and the occasional rail fence slouch ing through a draw in the rol ling hills, emphasize that "At Peace With The World" feeling. Surround this beauty with tiers of hills and mountains tinted from deep green to pastel blue, daub a lumpy white cloud or two in the hazy sky and you will have completed the general pan orama which follows you the entire way. Six and one half miles of travel take the traveler to his first Important left turn. The road is plainly marked "Fern Valley Road". IF) Andenen Ranch, original horn el pioneer southern Oregon family. turn the wrong direction across Bear Creek bridge to the main highway. Within two miles from the turn onto Fern Valley road, and Vx miles from your start ing, will be found on your left the well known Alford peach and apricot orchard. This is a large planting and was one of the pioneer tracts for this ever growing industry. Hold to the right by following the markers toward Talent and do not drive too fast because the crest of the hill a short distance ahead af fords an excellent perch from which to enjoy the scenes to ward Ashland and the Siskiyou pass. At ones' feet is a vineyard, beyond that a new pear orch ard surrounded by many more acres of pears. , Driving on, prepare for a left turn at the ten mile pent, this time 'on a path marked "Sun crest Road" and enjoy Suncrest Orchard which is but part of Rogue River Orchard company a vast holdings. Drive straight ahead past the packing sheds and across the small bridge, keeping to the main travelled road. By soon turning, right across an Irrigation ditch on Ashland road, you come to the Pacific highway. Now drive north toward Med ford and in passing observe Jackson Hot Springs, a delight ful spot for the family to enjoy a picnic outing. The day Is yet young at this point of your mo tor log and at the Talent North highway Junction, 17 miles by the speedometer, turn again to the left following the markers "Anderson Road" and "Dark Hollow Road", past the lumber mill on the left and then across the railroad tracks. It de serves honorable mention. Everyone speaks of Anderson Road or Anderson Creek, but gives little thought to the pio neer after whom these land marks were named. Tarry for a few moments on the south side of the highway and you will ob serve a mansion of typical American architecture standing proudly In a grove of various native trees, carefully planted many decades ago. The weather beaten roadside sign still desig nates It as Anderson Ranch. The property is still in the original family and is owned by Mrs. Phillips of Ashland, a daughter of Mr. Anderson. A silent grand eur seems to permeate the grounds and surroundings, and we are reminded of distinctive guests, even Royalty who was entertained here when valley folk were still considered pio neers. Now hold your hats for you are about to return home through a labyrinth of fields, orchards, and other outdoor splendor. Continue on Anderson road and don't turn right Into Phoenix. The following direc tion is west or left on Houston Road then right or north on Coleman Creek road past Colon el voorhies attractive home and orchard, which was one of the first large near tracts to be planted. At the cross roads ahead turn west following sign which reads Little AppieRate," "Jack sonville", and "Griffin Creek" The ever familiar Kings high way is soon reached and you find yourselves driving north back to Medford. the mileage zs, the time an hour and a half to properly enjoy. (P) The wheat market today yielded practically all the ground gain ed yesterday as prices sagged a cent a bushel due to selling based on war news which traders said appeared to be un favorable to the allies good weather and optimistic crop re ports. Other grains sagged with wheat, some oats and rye quot ations returning to the mini mums, which resulted in the virtual cessation of activity in these pits. NOTED DEAD Washington, June 8. fh Admiral Hugh Rodman, retired, 81, died at the naval hospital last night where he had been I suffering for some time from coronary thrombosis. Admiral Rodman was com mander of a division of the navy which Joined the British grand fleet during the world war. He also served with Ad miral Dewey in the Spanish American war battle of Manila bay. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Elizabeth Sayre Rodman. Admiral Rodman was born in Frankfort, Ky.. Jan. , 1859. and was graduated from the naval academy in 1880. Hot Grease Fatal Portland, June 8. June 8. lD Despite a 2 to 1 house approval, sweeping Wagner act amend ments built around creation of a new labor relations board were said by informed senators to day to be headed directly for a senate committee pigeon-hole. Appealing for senate action in the face of an adjournment drive, Rep. Smith (D-Va.), chair man of the NLRB Investigating committee which drafted the ori ginal revisions, declared that the house vote yesterday demon strated the country's demand for immediate amendments "as an essential part of the defense program."
