New Battleship Washington Y EAGER FOR Zl Nurses, 'Ambulance Drivers Apply By Score None Are Being Sent Overseas San Francisco, June $. vr' Eager volunteer! for nursing and ambulance driving aervice overseas are being turned down by the score every day at the American Red Cross head quarters hut. A. L. Schafer, Pacific area manager for the Red Cross, said many are surprised when they learn that no Red Cross nurses or ambulance drivers are being sent overseas from the United States. In the last war, Schafer ex plained, entire medical units were sent from this country; but European Red Cross soc ieties are better organized now, and provide their own nurses and drivers. America is sending only food and clothing, money, equipment and supplies. Supplies Sent Loaded onto the Red Cross ship McKeesport at Jersey City, for example, went ISO ambu lances, several hospital trucks and supplies for refugees clothing, drugs, gauze, soap, cooking utensils and a wide var iety of foodstuffs. An agree ment recently was made with the department of agriculture to purchase surplus foodstuffs at half price. An Initial consign ment included 8.881,000 pounds of wheat flour, 1,240,000 pounds of corn meal, 750,000 pounds of lard, 800,000 pounds of prunes and an equal amount of raisins. HUGH COLLINS GETS RE: Hugh B. Collins, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Collins of 2224 East Main street, was among 40 University of Oregon seniors commissioned second lieuten ants in the U. S. army reserve corps, ROTC headquarters at Eugene announced today. Daryl L. Evans, Grants Pass, was an other southern Oregon student commissioned. Collins is a student In the law school and although he is only 20 years old now, he will complete the law course next year. FOR 1940 CLASS Baccalaureate services for the 1940 graduates of St. Mary's Academy were held yesterday at Sacred Heart Church. Pres ent In the large congregation were members of the faculty of St. Mary's Sisters of Provi dence, Sacred Heart Hospital, and many relatives and friend of the graduates. Reverend Francis w. Black was celebrant of the Mass and delivered the occasional ad dress. He spoke Impressively concerning the need of true wisdom by which man compre hends his spiritual destiny and regulates his life and conduct according to Christian principle and practice. St. Mary's Academy Choir sane the Mass, "Mognae Deus Potentiae." The Offertory num ber, "O Panis Dulcissime" by Michalek gave a special note of beauty to the program which was concluded by a triumphal processional, "Lord God Our King." sung by the entire choir of fifty voices. Republican Committeemen Shown in Completed Count Except In the case of four ties, in which all contestants received one vote each, the of ficial count on republican pre cinct committeemen and com mit tee women has been com pleted. In Applegate precinct John O'Brien and Tom Mee were tied. Mee does not want the Job, so O'Brien can have It if he wants it. In Brownsboro precinct Mrs. Holly Wright and Ellyn Charley are tied, and in Mound precinct, Doris Nealon, Mrs. Verne Bro phy, Mrs. Violet Hamilton, and Mrs. Elmer Kyle are in a four way tie. In the Oakdale precinct Ralph Woodford and Larry Schade tied, and Schade reports he does not want it. Husbands and wives were named in the following precincts- Reese Crfk. Mr. and Mrs. W. R.
