Y., attorney, filed application for the first automobile patent In 1879 Number 549.160. Selden's patent was grant :d in 1895. But for a slight oversight he might have held a virtual monopoly on all automobile production. As it was, he received royalties on nearly every car made for 10 years until, in 1905, Henry Ford proved that Selden's patent was for the Brayion engine only. Selden did uphold his claim to the basic patent on the gasoline automobile, however, by having a car built from his patent specifications.
