THE ORIGINAL AUTO
Strange as It seems, although the Selden horseless carriage claimed legally to be the
progenitor of all modern automobiles, it was not actually bui't until 26 years after Qeorge
Selden. a Rochester, N. Y., attorney, filed application for the first automobile patent In 1879
Number 549.160.
Selden's patent was grant :d in 1895. But for a slight oversight he might have held a
virtual monopoly on all automobile production. As it was, he received royalties on nearly
every car made for 10 years until, in 1905, Henry Ford proved that Selden's patent was
for the Brayion engine only.
Selden did uphold his claim to the basic patent on the gasoline automobile, however,
by having a car built from his patent specifications. The car ran about as fast as a man
could walkl Tomorrowi Flying Family.
