A.A.A. mechanics again took charge of each car and gave it a final going over for stock status before the winners were announced. Presentation of the trophies to the first three winners in each of the nine price divisions was made during a colorful cere mony in front of the govern ment administration building in Yosemite. With the high, tow ering, snow-clad granite walls of the valley as a back-drop for the stage nature had created, the winning drivers were called up to a rustic platform one by one to receive their trophies and the plaudits of several hundred spectators who had traveled into the park to witness the final phase of the run. Winning drivers were particu larly honored in this most re cent stock car test when each was presented with a red and gold All-Star award sweater. Dull Wool Mart Boston, Jan. 13. (IP) (U. S. Dept. This year, as they did last year when cars battled through a blisxard and lines were down, the couts did a good turn by keeping the Run officials in communi cation with the location of the cars during the course of the Gil-more-Yosemite run. Gruelling Drive Proves Test of Drivers, Motors (continued from page 7) was purchased by A.A.A. offic ials from a regular independent dealer. The Lion Head motor oil was also procured in the same manner by the officials and was Identical to the product any mo torist may purchase. A week prior to the run, every one of the cars was turned over to American Automobile Asso ciation officials at Gilmore Sta dium where a small army of of ficial mechanics went to work to ascertain that each car was Identical to that whiqh any mo torist could purchase. Motors were taken down, gas lines checked, carburetors examined. Even the upholstery and tools carried were included in the rigid A.A.A. inspection. Offic ials were so particular during the early phase of the run that each car was subjected to a min imum of 234 separate examina tions before the final seal of ap proval as to stock status would be awarded. The complete rules prepared by the A.A.A. for the run stipu lated that when each competing car was in motion, it must be in gear at all times and the motor running. Coasting or declutch ing was absolutely forbidden. Each car had to obey all traffic laws and pay particular atten tion to coming to a complete halt at all boulevard stops. An ob server representing a competing car was assigned by officials to ride with ' the car during the course of the run. Never was a car permitted to leave the super vision of an A.A.A. represents tive from the time it was im pounded until it arrived at the finish line.
