Secretary. 10 OP Springfield, Tenn. U.R Mot. orlsts passing through Robert son county often shake their heads and think that farmers there don't know much about farming but they do. There are more crooked rows in those fields than in any other section of the United States, Many of the farms have taken on semblances of quilt patterns. and from the air they look like coats of many colors, stitched at the seams by sinuous ter races. . But while they appear most unorthodox, these farms are the farms of tomorrow. The men who till the soil on them can plow a straight furrow, but they have learned that the day of the straight row has passed. Contour rowi are far superior. Not only do they help conserve the soil, but they make the land more productive. A new fashion for rows, small grains, pastures and le gumes has been Introduced here by engineers and farm planners who are directing operations on a conservation demonstration project covering 30,000 acres. The project is being sponsored by the U. S. department of ag rlulture, which established special area here two years ago, Trail Trail, Jan. 8. (Spl.) Parking Meters Pay Eugene, Jan. 8. P Eu gene's parking meters brought $680.24 Into the city coffers dur ing their first month of opera tion, Treasurer A. E. Hulegaard said today. Total Income of the 260 machines was $1,360.80. FEATURE RECORDS SET IN PAST YEAR Old Standards Exceeded In 1939 By Latest Models Of Planes, Autos, Boats. Washington, D. C (Spl.) A pilot flew 878 miles per hour, an automobile driver sped more than 388 miles per hour, two aviators soared in a seaplane for 30 days and a motorboat was driven 141 miles per hour. These are among the records for 1939 listed in a bulletin from the National Geographic society. "At Buffalo, N. Y.. H. Lloyd Chllds dived at the rate of 875 miles an hour while demon strating a Curtlss pursuit air plane to French army officials. For straight flying, however, a new record was made by German flier, Fritz Wendell. He flew 489.11 miles per hour, six miles better than the former record," the bulletin says. Paris io London.
