an automobile driver sped more
than 388 miles per hour, two
aviators soared in a seaplane
for 30 days and a motorboat
was driven 141 miles per hour.
These are among the records
for 1939 listed in a bulletin
from the National Geographic
society.
"At Buffalo, N. Y.. H. Lloyd
Chllds dived at the rate of 875
miles an hour while demon
strating a Curtlss pursuit air
plane to French army officials.
For straight flying, however, a
new record was made by
German flier, Fritz Wendell. He
flew 489.11 miles per hour, six
miles better than the former
record," the bulletin says.

'Francisco Sarabla, foremost
Mexican aviator, made a rec
ord flight from Mexico, D. P.,
to New York, 2,359 miles, in
10 hours and 48 minutes. A
new U. S. transcontinental flight
record was set by a flying fort
ress' of 22 tons when, in Au
gust, a bomber flew from Bur
bank, Cal., to New York, 2,800
miles, in 9 hours, 14V4 minutes.

broke the round-trip airplane
record from England to Cape
Town, flying the 13,000-mile
route In 4 days, 10 hours and
18 minutes and cutting 31 hours
from the previous record. Paris
and London are only 41 minutes

Clipper Records Fall.
"Clipper ship records fell too
In 1939. The American Clipper
of Pan American Airways flew
from Southampton, England, to
New York by the northern
route in 29 hours and 83 min
utes. The Yankee Clipper get
a new flight record between
the Azores and New York; It
flew the route In 17V4 hours,
or 29 minutes under the pre
vious record.
"Imperial Airways set new
record for the Ireland to New
foundland Jump when the 'Cab
ot' made the flight In 13.005
hours, one-half hour under the
previous record.
"On the Bonneville salt flat,
Utah, In August, John R. Cobb,
London fur broker, sped 388.85
mlleg an hour, about 10 miles
faster than the former record
held by another Englishman,
Capt. George E. T. Eyston. Sir
Malcolm Campbell, former hold
er of automobile speed records,
in 1939 shattered the speed
record on water by driving his
craft 141.74 miles an hour. The
former record was 130.9 miles,
set by the same pilot.
