From Sardine Crack Mr. and Mrs. John Litster, owners' of the House of Mystery on Sar dine creek north of Gold Hill transacted business and called upon friends here today. New Garage Donald F. Miller of 542 Bartlett street ap plied at the city building in snector's office Saturday for a permit to construct a new ga- rage at a stated cost of $50. Drills Set Company A and headquarters company, third battalion, 186th infantry of the Oregon national guard will hold regular drills at 8 p. m. Tues day and Thursday in the Med- iord armory. Travel North B. G. Harding U. S. internal revenue agent, and Erie M. Gray, deputy col lector of internal revenue, left this morning to transact official business in cities north of here. Both expectea to be back in their offices in the Medford fed eral building Wednesday. To Portland Moore Hamil ton, editor of the News, left by train last night for Portland to begin his new duties of assist ant area manager of the 1940 census. Mr. Hamilton will be stationed in Portland during the census period which is calcu lated at about six months. Mrs Hamilton will publish the News during her husband s absence. Promoted Promotion of Sgt. William Prince to 'the rank of staff sergeant, U. S. army air corps, was announced today in a press release from the com- mandins officer of Hamilton field. San Rafael. Ca., where Prince is on duty with the 9th bombardment squadron. Prince is a brother 'of H. T. Prince, for many years a resident of Medford. Court Citations Franklin A Jones, 19, of Medford was cited by state police yesterday to appear in justice of the peace court this afternoon on a charge of failure to stop at a highway Intersection. Harley G. Cum mings, 22, of Rogue River was cited to appear in Gold Hill Justice court Tuesday afternoon on a charge of driving a car without an operator's license. To Elect Federal Business Association of Southern Oregon will meet for the election of officers and to transact other 1 annual business in the Holland hotel at 12 noon Thursday P. Leavitt, president, suggested that members telephone John E. Doerr, Jr., secretary, regarding their plans to attend so that adequate accommodations may be provided. The secretary may be reached by telephoning Med ford 841. Held In Jail James O'Malley. 51, of Klamath Falls and George C. Reese, 28, of Chiloquin were being held in the Jackson coun ty jail today awaiting disposi tion of charges that they sold liquor to Indians. Each was held In $2500 bail after arraign ment before U. S. Commissioner Bert C. Thomas in Klamath Falls. The defendants were brought from Klamath Falls to the jail here by Paul Hanlln, deputy U. S. marshal. Conference A week's confer ence of national forest adminis trative assistants opened at Rogue River national forest headquarters this morning. Shank, Siskiyou national for est. Grants Pass: and Henry U. Sarles, Fremont national for est, Lakeview. Lodge to Meet Knights of Pythias will convene this even ing. All members are asked to attend .as the Grants Pass lodge will be here to hold joint initiation in the rank of esquire. Refreshments will be served. Grange Program Phoenix Grange will meet for a regular session Tuesday. A special pro gram will be presented and the Rogue Valley Men's chorus will sing. Birthdays in the last quar ter will also be observed. Have Baby Word was re ceived in Medford today of the birth of a boy to Mr. and Mrs. Warren Hamlin, Saturday night in Emanuel hospital, Portland. The baby weighed eight pounds and a quarter ounce. He is the grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Sweeney of 1125 West Main street. Mrs. Hamlin is the for mer Kathryn Sweeney. Ackermant Here Mr. and Mrs. A. D. Ackerman of Reno, Nev., are recent arrivals in this city and are staying at the Hotel Holland. Mr. Ackerman is route agent for the Railway Express Agency and plans to transact business here during the holiday season. Other Agency men here on business include F. Francks, agent at Pomona, Cal., Volney R. Burton superintendent from Sacra- mento, and Sam Neff of Sacra mento, Cal. R IN CRASH DEATH A Jury award of $7500 in favor of A. J. Ellenberger, ex Ashland resident, as administra tor of the estate of his son was disclosed today following the return of Attorneys Gus and Don Newbury from Bend where they conducted the damage suit for the plaintiff in the De schutes county circuit court last week. The suit was directed against ,L. A. W. Nixon and number of timber companies for whom Nixon worked. A. J. Ellenberger was seri ously injured and his son Sam uel was killed near Bend in September, 1938, when Nixon's car ran into the truck and trail er in which the Ellenberger family was moving from Ash land to eastern Oregon. New bury & Newbury instituted damage proceedings and last May a jury brought in a verdict of $12,000 in favor of A. Ellenberger. Last week's suit followed with A. J. Ellenberger suing as administrator of his son's estate. PAIR IN MINOR CRASH LACK DRIVING LICENSE IS POLICE DISCOVERY It was only a minor accident, occurring on the Pacific high way near Central Point late Sat urday afternoon, but the drivers of the two cars. Jack W. Ema- hiser, 26. of Gold Hill and Ar thur Lusk, 24. of Central Point, :ot in trouble with the law be cause neither, of them had an onerator's license. State police, investigating me accident, cited Lusk to appear in Gold Hill justice of the peace court this afternoon, and tma- hiser to appear In Medford Jus tice court on December 18. Both men were charged with driving an automobile without an op erator's license. In other minor accidents over the week-end, according to re ports on file today, Lowell Du- nray of 817 Soutn ivy street and Jack Murray of 804 South Ivy street drove cars colliding at 12th and Ivy streets bun- day afternoon; Mark Miller of 418 South Oakdale avenue and E. Manj of Route 4 were, op erators of vehicles involved in mishap at Bartlett and Main streets Saturday afternoon and Noble A. Hamilton of 411 Ar cadia street and William G. Bar ber of 618 McAndrews road drove machines involved in a slight accident on Cottage street Saturday afternoon. LAURA E. CARTER FUNERAL TUESDAY Mrs. Laura E. Carter, a form er resident of Jackson county, passed away in Los Angeles, Calif., last Friday. She left her home in Seattle two weeks ago to visit her son. i Her husband, W. H. Carter, passed away several years ago, She leaves to mourn her pass ing three children; Mrs. G. Smith, Seattle H. E. Carter, Ft. Yukon, Alaska, and E. W. Car ter, Los Angeles.
