(P) Janet Benedict, 18, who told of being held captive for. three months In a San Francisco disorderly house, was back with her in jured mother here today. The mother was seriously hurt In an automobile collision while returning from a futile search for the girl in the San Francisco bay region. San Francisco police said the girl left there on a bus Wednes day evening, her fare paid by police donations. She arrived by train early today but declined to explain the change In sched ule. . , Miss Benedict sought police help when she read a newspaper account of her mother's injuries. Dick Rush and Morris Prink have rented the Cook ranch, which Is known better here by the name of the Doc and Vic ranch, and have plowed and seeded the better part of It. Mrs. John Kelson and little Janet and Mrs. Frank Nelson were Medford visitors Wednesday. Mr. and Mrs. Homer Martin and son Stanley of Reese Creek visited their son and family, Mr. and Mrs. Melvln Martin. Monday, Mr. and Mrs. R. H. Seegmlller were Medford visitors December B. The school children are very busy preparing a Christmas program and making Christmas gifts. There will he a lot of pleasant surprises for someone again this year. Fields, 58, carpenter, with driv ing while nude. Condon, Ore., Dec. 9. (Pi A.A.A. Administrator R. M. Evans told the Eastern Oregon Wheat league today he favored restoration of a self-financing plan to provide parity wheat payments under the present federal farm act. He declared that whether the certificate type of plan or some other was finally worked out "the ' farmers of the United States are determined to hold gains made after more than 20 years of effort. To do that they must insure a permanent fi nancing plan as an essential part of the program." A continuing plan for parity payments is a farmers' tariff, he went on. Such a plan is not contrary to the interests of the consumer, he said, so long as the market price, plus tax, does not exceed parity. Evans flew here from yes terday's hearing of the appro priation committee in Washing ton, D. C. He declared the farm act the best piece of agricul tural legislation ever enacted in any country. Detailed applica tion is up to the farmers, he went on. The league had already urged some certificate plan, endorsing the present farm law in gen eral a fundamentally sound. Evans addressed representatives of 13 wheat producing states. C. K. Barker of Condon was elected president of the league; Sim Culley, Weston, vice-president; C. W. Smith, Corvallis, secretary - treasurer. Pendleton was awarded the 1940 convention. Eugene, Dec. 9. (P) Final complete official returns ended the current campaign of Lane county Grangers to form a peo ple's utility power district in defeat but rumblings were heard tonight that "the fight has only begun." Although Master Allen Wheel er would not be quoted on fu ture plans, prominent members of the Pomona Grange made no secret that the PUD issue would be on the ballot again in Lane county In 1940. Final figures showing that the measure had lost in the 42 rural precincts by only 236 votes cheered backers of the power plan although five municipali ties spurned the bill three to one. ' ' Total ballots cast gave 2.890 against the PUD and 1.901 for it. In the rural precincts the tally was 1,886. to 1.450. The count in the cities rejected the proposal 1,204 to 451. Eighteen rural areas voted In favor of the plan and two dis tricts reported ties. Boy Tragedy. Liberty, Mo., Dec. 9. (P) John David Harmon, 10, won a school boys' contest to see who could climb highest in a large sycamore tree but lost his life. He fell, fracturing his skull. Portland, Dec. 9. (Pi A third term for President Roose velt was advocated today in a message sent to the sixth an nual Oregon Commonwealth Federation convention by Presi dent S. Stephenson Smith. Smith, unable to attend, pre dicted Roosevelt would be draft ed and re-elected by a "land slide." He also urged delegates to help consolidate new deal policies In Oregon. The convention will consider resolutions for a third term and repeal of the state milk control law. The Columbia district coun cil of the Maritime Federation of the Pacific, principally made up of CIO unions, refused to send delegates, but the Port land Industrial Council, CIO, and many Individual CIO un ions were represented. (IP) Police said today a report of an at tempt to bomb the Firth of Forth bridge near the big Ro syth naval base originated when a length of film tossed out of Carpenter Missing. Grants Pass, Dec. 9. (P) Alarmed Grave creek residents reported that Frank Taylor, car penter on a hotel being con structed there, had been miss ing for four weeks.
