MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE. MEDFORD, OREGON. FRIDAY, DECEMBER 8. 1939. PAGE FIVE HEAVY DOWNPOUR BREAKS DROUGHT IN ROGUE VALLEY Rain Follows Windy Night More Forecast Precipi tation Will Aid Farming. Rogue River valley's extreme need for rain was relieved this morning when a heavy fall started about 10:15. The down pour followed a forty-mile-an-hour wind which blew most of Thursday night. Rainfall this morning aver aged about .20 inch an hour and according to the local United States weather bureau office if this rate continued for four hours today the month's defic iency of .85 would be wiped opt and if it continued for twelve hours the season's defic iency of 2.73 would be washed away. The bureau pointed out that .20 fall is considered heavy as moderate precipitation is from .11 to .30 inches. Rainfall last December at this time, showed an excess of .63 inches. The total deficiency last year was .09. Mora Predicted Total amount of rainfall in the first eight days of Decem ber last year was 1.52 Inches. For the same time this month it was only .02. Local weather forecast is for occasional rain tonight and Sat urday with little change in tem perature. During the wind last night there was slight change between the high and low temperature with thermometer reading high, 59; low 56. County Agent Robert G. Fowler said the moisture, if con tinued, would be of high value for fall plowing, and some grain seeding, delayed by lack of moisture. It would also help fall pastures. Farmers reported the ground has been too dry and hard for deep plowing, for several weeks. Pope Pius Makes Prayer For Peace Rome, Dec. 8. (P) Pope Pius XII prayed that peace be restored to the world as he made a ceremonial visit today to the Basilica Santa Maria Maggiore, where he celebrated his first mass 40 years ago. The Pope and officials of the Papal court rode in an open automobile from the Vatican to the old church through streets lined with cheering crowds. Rear Admiral Dies Of Heart Attack San Pedro, Calif., Dec. 8. (JP) Death struck Rear Admiral George Julian Meyers, 58, com mander of the base force of the United States fleet, at sea yes terday, while he was on duty on his flagship. The Argonne, off San Pedro. The Light That Must Not Fail OF OLD CIVILIZATION Salt Lake City, Utah (U.R) Charles E. Dibble of the Univer sity of Utah has in his possession relics he believes indicate an archaic civilization flourished near Mexico City between 200 B. C. and 400 A. D. Dibble found the relics specimens of clay and pottery figures and jars while "kibit izing" on construction of a Mexican federal highway near Mexico City. Dibble said when he saw the specimens turned over by workmen he asked for and was granted permission to search for other relics in the dirt. Dibble, assistant professor in the university archeology de partment, said the new road passes over the site of a town that once flourished on the shores of an ancient lake that was called Lake Texcoco. Extreme Caution. San Francisco. (U.R) When a local concern received an order from Milpitas, a town of 200 population, for 200 bathroom scales, it decided that an inves tigation would be advisable be fore filling the order. It de veloped that the 200 scales were wanted for the use of pea pick ers on which to weigh their hampers. TO SLAIN HITCH-HIKER Albany, Dec. 8. UP) The identity of the hitch-hiker who was shot and killed Wednesday after taking the car of a Klam ath Falls salesman, Oliver Spik er, remained unknown today as authorities awaited a report from the identification bureaus at Washington and Sacramento, Calif. Fingerprint files at Salem re vealed no clue to his identity. Captain Walter Lansing of the state police said. DRIVE: GOAL IS 250 TO With a goal of from 250 to 300 members, the Rogue Snow men launched their annual membership drive this morning under the direction of Aubrey Norris, membership committee chairman. Included on the program to be carried out by the Snowmen this winter is the purchasing of a portable ski lift for members. free instruction of all members in the art of skiing technique, and regular week-end trips to Crater lake. Through the co operation of Jack Root, local travel specialist, busses will be chartered to make the trip to Crater lake at a nominal cost to members. 1 The McDonald Basin ski bowl area will also be improved and exploited this winter, and the Snowmen have great plans for this ideal winter playground. Other members of the mem bership committee are Ken Den man, Snowmen president, and Fred Fry, Dick Finch, Dr. I. H. Gove, Bob Holmes, Warlow Purdin, Jack Root, Larry Schade, Jr., Dale Smith, Harold Wall, Harold Wainscott and Sammy Young. Too Many Prunes. San Jose, Cal. (U.R) With California producing a prune crop that has left a vast surplus over what the population of the United States will eat, prune growers are having the Uni versity of California experi ment with prunes as a food for hogs, cattle, dairy herds and sheep. Card Club's Peace Spans Two Decades Cleveland, Ohio (U.R) Bridge players who bicker could take lessons from a card club here which has met weekly for 20 years without a quarrel. "But we don't play bridge and perhaps that accounts for the no-quarrel record," said Mrs. Carl Litschert, hostess at the club's most recent meeting. "The eight married "couples in our group started by playing pedro many years ago. Then we played 500 for a time. Now our most popular game is pinochle and still no quarrels!" Judge Parker Tacoma, Dec. 8. (P) Judge Emmett Newton Parker, 80, chief justice of the Washing ton State supreme court during 1921 and 1922 and a member of the state's highest bench for 30 consecutive years, died in a hospital here today following a brief illness. COMELY YOUNG LASS WILL TEACH YOUTHS SCIENCE OF FLYING Troy, H. T. IIP) Comely Barbara Klbbee, 15, sees noth ing unusual in her new task of teaching aviation to the male students of Rensselaer Polytech nic Institute, the oldest school of engineering and science in the country. Neither Is she expecting com plications to arise from the men students' interest in "teacher" as a prospective girl friend rather than as instructor. "I won't have any trouble after the first flight," she pre dicted. RPI, 115 years old. con sistently declines to permit en rollment of young women, al though requests are received every year. Officials agreed to engage comely Barbara as fly ing instructor in a Civil Aero nautic Authority class, however, "because she la a well quali fied person." Licensed as a private pilot in 1936, Miss Kibbee won a com mercial pilot rating in 1937, and a flight instructor's certi ficate in 1939. She is a graduate of the Ryan School of Aeronau tics, San Diego, Cal. Miss Kibbee. a member of a socially prominent family in nearby Albany, N. Y., has other interests besides aviation. "Strange as it seems," she smiles, "I like to cook." In the winter she enjoys a glide over the snow on skis, as well as a glide through the air behind a thundering airplane motor.
