MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE, MEDFORD. OREGON, SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 19, 1939. PAGE SEVEN SOLVED WITH HEW NASH WEATHER EVE Outguessing the weather, a problem the weatherman finds too hard to solve, is part of the day's routine for Nash's im proved new "Weather Eye" sys tem of conditioning air for 1940. According to Walter W. Ab " bey. localjNash dealer, with new J- headquarters at 123 South Riv erside. Although car weather-making is this ingenious device's No. 1 Job. it does a lot of other things as it goes along. It keer3 the air fresh and at the comfort level you like, it whisks out to bacco smoke, and it bans deadly carbon monoxide from the car. The "Weather Eye", original ly introduced by Nash Motors in 1938, is said to have reached a new high in comfort efficiency this year. In the new 1940 Nash cars, the driving public will actually see the uncanny "Weather Eye", the alert weather watchman , which automatically prevents changes In outside weather from t affecting inside car comfort. This device is mounted in a trim tenite cage on top of the in strument panel. J V? The car weather system pro ' per with its processed filter, v rain shedder, conditioning cham ber, sirocco fan and radiation vents is located under the cowl. It draws in large quan titles (up to 600 cubic feet per minute) of fresh outside air through the opened cowl venti lator, routes it through the rain shedder to remove excess mois ture, then through a purification filter, and then to a warming ' chamber where the air is heated to the comfort level specified by the driver who has 11 choices from Maytime coolness to hot. A flick of a radio-like control dial is all that is necessary to et the system. The 'Eye" au tomaticaily maintains the car comfort designated on the dial, regardless of outside tempera ture changes. ' When the system is in opera tion, the cowl ventilator is kept f open at all times, even in down- pours, and the windows of the ear kept closed. This results in draftless ventilation. The for ward motion of the car forces large quantities of fresh air in through the open cowl; and when the car is standing, powerful new sirocco fan pulls the outside air into the interior Air pressure inside the car Is always slightly greater than outside pressure, naturally re stilting in the constant move ment of air outward through minute door and window vents. In the operation of most cars forward motion creates a slight j vacuum within the car, and air enters the car at every minute opening, creating annoying aratts. lhe reverse is true with the new Nash "Weather Eye" system. This is an important safety . factor. Carbon monoxide tests show that while .02 per cent of , carbon monoxide in a car in terior is not dangerous, .03 and - .04 per cent results in drowsi ness and fatigue. From .04 to .07 per cent brings unconscious ness, and above that, death. An additional comfort and safety feature of the "Weather Eye" system is the elimination of moisture-laden air that con denses on windows and wind- i shields in cold weather. In ex- , ceptionally violent weather, powerful defrosters remove ice . and sleet. Winter Driving Given Boost The popularity of winter mo toring, which highway authori ties declare has been increasing rapidly during the past two years, is expected to be given another sharp boost this year by radical improvements in the system of conditioning air in motor cars for winter driving. Instead of merely heating static air that is already in the car, the newest system brings large quantities of fresh, filtered air from the outside, warms it au tomatically to the temperature specified by the driver. The cut away drawing above shows how the ingenious Nash "Weather Eye" system of conditioning air works. With a steady stream of air moving through the condi tioner and into the car, circula tion of clean, warm air is uni form in all parts of the interior. Temperature is thermostatically controlled and regardless of out side changes in weather, temper ature within the car is always at the comfort level chosen by the driver by setting a radio-like dial. E Washington, Nov. 18. (IP) The agriculture department is revamping its farm-aid program for 1940 to shift the emphasis irom crop production control to measures designed to assure greater protection of the na tion's soil resources from wind arid water erosion. Recent surveys show, officials said, that America's farming land is wearing out faster than it is being restored because farmers as a whole are not using cultivation practices which would prevent soil wastage. Under tentative regulations drafted by the agricultural ad justment administration, farm ers will be asked to devote more attention and efforts to conser vation measures if they want to share the $775,000,000 benefit payment fund. Differing from past farm pro grams, farmers will have to do more than plant within acreage allotments given them for such major crops as cotton, wheat, corn, tobacco, potatoes, and pea nuts, in order to obtain the max imum amount of subsidies. They will be asked to in crease their plantings of le gumes and other soil-building crops, to return more land to grass and pastures, particularly land subject to erosion and un suited for cultivation. Special efforts will be made to prevent over-stocking and over-grazing of pastureland. Officials said Secretary Wal lace has taken the view that past conservation efforts have been wholly inadequate, making it the duty of governmental agencies to take steps to pro mote greater conservation. E T Hongkong, Nov. 18. (PI- The Japanese army announced loaay that It had made a 50 mile advance in four days and entered Kwangsi province in its tnrust at Chinas southwestern lifeline supply routes. If this is true Kwangsi, famed for its fighting men, becomes 14th of China's 24 provinces to be invaded since the Japan ese began in July, 1937, their effort to conquer China. The announcement came from the headquarters on Dragon Head island of the expedition which Wednesday effected a landing under the guns of a fleet on the western Kwangtung province coast only 35 miles from the French Indo-China border. The Japanese said they had captured a Kwangsi walled town only 30 miles from Nan ning, chief military center of the province from which run a narrow gauge railway and a highway into French Indo China. Vital supplies have been reaching the Chinese army over these routes. En route, the Japanese said, Motorists Welcome Reduction in Tire Prices Says Furnas Announcement by The Good year Tire & Rubber Co., of dras tic reductions in the consumer list price of tires and tubes has been enthusiastically received by residents of this area, accord ing to Charles C. Furnas, pro prietor of the Medford Service Station, local Goodyear dealers. "The public seems apprecia tive of the fact that Goodyear has made this contribution to ward prica stabilization in the face of the current general up ward trend," Mr. Furnas de clared. "We have received many calls of commendation, but real proof of the way local motorists feel about the reductions is seen in the increase in sales since the new prices became effective on November 1. "Coming at this time of year, when highways in many sections of the country are wet and slip pery, the price reductions are especially important to car own ers who realize ihat new tires, with sharp gripping treads, are the best possible protection against skids. Mr. Furnas said In the original announcement President P. W. Litchfield of Goodyear explained that the re ductions were made possible by savings in manufacturing costs resulting from modernization of the company's factories in Ak ron, Los Angeles, Jackson. Mich., and Gadsden, Ala., and by establishment of bulk plants at strategic points throughout the U. S. that have brought about a more simplified system of distribution. He also empha sized the company's belief that "this principle of immediately passing a legitimate share of such savings along to the public is consistent with enlightened economic policy and indispen sable to the continuance of na tional recovery." Rosanoff, director of institutions, said today Robert V. Chandler, superintendent of the Industrial Home for the Blind in Oakland, would be transferred shortly and a blind person placed in charge of the-school. they captured Yamhslen, city of 20,000 about 30 miles inland from the expedition's landing place. . Chinese official spokesmen admitted that the Japanese had advanced 30 miles since the landing but said the Chinese withdrawal was according to plan, to get the invaders out of the coastal plain into the hilly hinterland where defense would be easier.
