(U.P) Tho present war is one of five majnr periods in history since man first began knocking his neigh bor around witli a club, .acord ing to Dr. Constantino T'anun zio. professor of sociology at the University of California. Dr. Panunzio, author of "Mk- lor Social Institutions." lists these five major war periods: 1. Ancient times when war was a part of the daily routine. 2. The era of the Ftonwn Empire, when there was a par tial realization that war should be controlled. Home unified the western Vorld and created a 200-year peace. 3. The rise of Christianity and Mohammedanism, which di rectly contributed to warlike ai-, tivitios for scvrral centuries in spite of sporadic efforts of kings and pope to suppress war. 4. The close of the 15th cen tury to the beginning of the world war, during which the rise of Protestantism and the clash of imperial ambitions brought several centuries of war. 5. The beginning of the World war to the present time, which has included the Ethio pian and Albanian conquest:, the Far Eastern conflict and the expansion of German Nazism. Pantinzio finds that the pres ent war period is characterized by two phenomena. "Whereas during previous per iods," he states, "the will of the personal monarch or of a small ruling clique was sufficient to plunge countries into war, today the declaration of war with most countries rests with the people. "The second phenomenon con sists in the growing employment of propaganda by the govern ments as a means of forming the sentiments, opinions und preju dices of the people into compli ance with the aims of the rulers." t flOR ' Meteorological Report DAILY FUNERAL Funeral services for James F. Recitation of the Rosary will STATE PRESIDENT Southern Oregon funeral di rectors held a dinner meeting in the Medford Hotel last night in honor of E. F. Fortmillcr of Al bany, president of the Oregon Funeral Directors' association. who represented the State of Oregon at the annual convention of the National Funeral Di rectors' association in Oklahoma City, Okla., last month. Mr. Fortmillcr reported that through efforts of Oregon with assistance of delegates from western states, four Pacific Coast men were elected to the highest offices in the national association for the first time in its history. John W. Eberle of Pasadena, Cal., was unanimously elected president and the 1940 convention city will be San Francisco. Discussions on professional and educational subjects were led by John Perl of Medford, Will M. Dodge of Ashland, An drew W. Ward of Klamath Falls and Executive Secretary George Ryan of Portland. The following members were unanimously elected as officers for 1040: President, A. J. Ousley, Lakcvicw; vice-president, Mac M. Hall, Grants Pass; secretary, Clarence M. Litwiller, Ashland. H. W. Conger and Frank Perl of Medford acted as hosts and past-President Earl Whitlock of Klamath Falls presided. Preceding the meeting a sleight of hand performance was staged by Johnnie Eads of Med ford. Guests included Mrs. C. M. Litwiller, Ashland; Mrs. Mar garet Ward and Mrs. E. R. Whit lock, Klamath Falls; C. W. Mor ris, Medford and A. W. Mundt, Grants Pass. Phetteplace of 325 South Holly street, died in a Portland hospital Wednesday morning. Mr. and Mrs. Phetteplace of this city were in Eugene last week end when they were in formed of the serious illness of the elder Mr. Phettcplace. They went immediately to Portland and were with him at the time of death. The deceased had been ill only a short time. The funer al was held today in The Dalles. Mrs. Phettcplace returned to Medford last evening and her husband plans to return the first of next week. LITTRELL PLANS A motion for right to file a second amended complaint in the suit of Robert Littrell, through his guardian ad litem, aeainst Lee Smith, as nneratnr of the Yellow Cabs, for $6000 alleged personal Injury dam ages was filed yesterday in cir cuit court by Attorney Charles W. Reames. Notice was served the motion would be called for hearing in circuit court next Monday. In the trial of the case con cluded last Friday, a circuit court Jury disagreed after five hours deliberation and was dis charged. The damage suit is the out growth of an auto-bicycle acci dent at Main street and Central avenue last July, in which young Littrell was struck by a taxi, driven by an employe of Smith, and allegedly sustained injuries to his leg, necessitating medical care and hospital treat ment over a considerable period. FIR. AI Hyde Park, N. Y., Nov. 18. (j)President Roosevelt laugh ed long and loudly today when reporters told him there had been considerable speculation about what he meant when, in laying the cornerstone for the Jefferson memorial in Washing ton Wednesday, he said he hoped by January, 1941. to be able to return for the dedication of the memorial itself. Slapping a hand on his knee at a press conference, the chief executive chortled that he had made the remark deliberately, but he still did not amplify it. There had been numerous at tempts to analyze his statement about January, 1941, to see whether it would throw any light on the third term issue. The president's present tenn expires January 20, 1941. The memorial will be dedicated the same month, but Mr. Roosevelt did not indicate Wednesday whether he hoped to return for that ceremony before or after January 20, or as a government official or private citizen.
