NOVEMBER 12. 1939 PAGE FIVE Society By Clara (continued from page four) Noted Harpist Will Appear Here On November 19 The announcement that Ruth Lorraine Close, solo harpist, will be presented in concert on Sun day afternoon, November 19, by the Medford Musical society, is creating unusual interest. This artist who has won inter national renown, has not previ ously appeared in Medford. Miss Close, American born, received her musical education in France, and since her debut in Paris, has played many concerts in Europe She also recently made a round-the-world concert tour, appear ing as harp soloist in Shanghai, Manila, Dutch East Indies, and Singapore. Miss Close has been the solo harpist of the Portland Sym phony orchestra under Wilhelm van Hoogstraten for the past sev eral seasons, and has also played under the direction of other world famous conductors, Jose Iturbi, Artur Rodzinski, and Eugene Goosens, and has an un usual collection of autograph pictures of these musical celebri ties. Her collection also includes one of the great Toscanini, who inscribed it to her after hearing her play in concert in France. This interesting artist prefaces her numbers on the harp with illuminating comments, making her diversified program alluring and doubly enjoyable. A facile speaker, this artist has also writ ten numerous articles on musical subjects and is at present en gaged on a book of reminis cences to be titled "Conductors I Have Known." Ruth Lorraine Close comes to Medford direct from concerts in San Francisco and Sacramento, California, and the Medford Mu sical society is anticipating great interest in this musical event The concert will take place in St. Mark's Guild hall at 4 o'clock November 19. Wilson Home Scene W.C.T.U. Meeting The W.C.T.U. met Thursday afternoon at the home of Mrs. Cora Wilson. Mrs. F. I. Caulkins gave the devotional message, taking as her topic, "Overcome Evil with Good." A hymn, "Faith of Our Fathers" followed. In keeping with the thought of National Education week, Mrs. S. L. Divine gave an impressive talk on "Our Flag." Touching on the beginning of American his tory, she told of the making of the first flag. Bible references were read by Mrs. Bell Littrell. Mrs. Divine related .the story of the making of "Old Glory," in 1831, and its naming by Captain Driver. She recited very dra matically, "Flag of My Land", written by Mr. T. O. Daly. Rules for displaying the flag were given and the Thanksgiv ing proclamation by George Washington was read. Mrs. Di vine closed by singing "The Story of Old Glory." Mrs. Minnie Bryant gave a brief report of the W.C.T.U. state convention in Eugene when the national president, Mrs. Ida B. Wise Smith was guest speak er. Fuller reports will be given i later. At the December meeting. Mrs. Grace Tucker will present the Children's Farm Home pro gram, when gifts will be re ceived to be sent to the home. Refreshments were served by the hostess, assisted by Mes dames Millie Tucker, H. Einkopf and Bell Littrell. Loyalty Circle Will Meet Soon Loyalty circle of the First M. E. church will meet at the home of Mrs. Ray Harrison, 719 West Fourth street, Wednesday morning at 10 o'clock. Members are to bring their own service and a covered dish. The regular business session was held after the luncheon with the president, Mrs. I. N. McCol lum presiding. Members brought canned fruit and other articles to be sent to Mauley Center Home at Portland. - Mrs. Ralph Woodford and group had charge of arrange ments for the luncheon and pro gram. Miss May Phipps gave a very interesting report of the Cascade district convention held in Port land recently. A special musical number on the program was a vocal duet by Mrs. John Hubler and Mrs. J. P. Conrad. The thank offering meeting will be held at the home of Mrs. E. L. Heninger on November 17, 1000 West Main street. Eagle Women Have Parties The auxiliary of the Fraternal Order of Eagles will entertain this month with a series of card parties, the second of which will be held Tuesday evening at 8 o'clock in the Eagles hall on North Front street. Similar parties will be held each Tuesday during November. A grand prize will be given at the end of the series as well as prizes for winners each evening. The public is invited to partici pate in the affairs. Pinochle, five hundred and bridge will be played during the evening. . ' R. N. Dinner Dance Thursday Evening Plans are all completed for the Royal Neighbors' annual trukey dinner for members and families and invited guests, Thursday evening at 6:30 o clock in the K. P. hall. The dinner, which will be served cafeteria style, will be followed by a surprise program. Later, dancing will be enjoyed to the tunes of Silva's orchestra. Marjorie Pierson has charge of the program. Building Bridge Club to Convene Building Bridge club will meet Thursday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock for dessert luncheon and an afternoon of bridge at the home of Mrs. Anna Miksche. Drummond enter tained the Thursday Morning Study club last week with an interesting paper on early South American civilization. A book review by Mrs. Mark Goldy on "Day of Immense Sun" by Blair Niles, had to do with Inca civilization at the time of the Spanish conquest of Peru. "Mr. Immanuel" by Louis Golding, given by Mrs. F. H Reum, told the story of an Eng lish Jew's experience in Ger many under the Nazi regime. Apple Surprise Take as many apples as you have people to serve, and peel and core them. Mix the contents of a can of dry cocoanut with maraschino juice, using enough to moisten without making the cocoanut wet. Roll the apples in honey and then into the cocoa- nut until they are covered. Stuff the core with chopped cherries and nuts adding a teaspoonful of sherry for each apple. Bake in slow oven, basting occasionally with a mixture of sherry and maraschino juice. Six Hurt In Bus Spokane. Nov. 11. (P) Six persons were brought to St. Lukes hospital here Friday suf fering from injuries received when a Washington motor coach stage ran off the highway about 15 miles west of Spokane.
