Furnas In a proclamation today urged citi zens of Medford to join whole heartedly with the veterans in observance of Armistice day Sat urday, and in the purchase of forget-me-nots, now on sale by the Disabled American Veterans. The proclamation follows: "As mayor of the city of Med ford, I urge the citizens of this community to whole heartedly Join with veteran organizations In observing Armistice Day, Sat urday, November 11. An out standing program has been planned by Medford Post 15, American Legion, for people of this city and the Rogue River valley. Legionnaires well de serve the interest and support of everyone in making this celebra tion a most successful one. "The Disabled American Vete rans are now selling forget-me-nots which have been made by veterans in hospitals throughout the nation. Every penny of the proceeds of this sale will be used to advance the welfare of war veterans in hospitals to make life a bit brighter and easier for those who sacrificed so much for America. No thoughtful and patriotic American should miss the opportunity of buying one of these significant little flowersl "The nations are few in which there is peace today twenty one years after the Armistice of the last world war. There are havoc and destruction; homes bereft and orphaned children. There is lack of freedom, and personal liberty once again be comes a cause to be fought for. This is true in lands where men, women and children have the same affections . . . the same emotions as our own wives and husbands, sons and daughters. For them this Armistice Day is a sad one, and for them we too must feel distress and compas sion. How much more precious now looms our own complete democracy; the fact that we in this troubled world still consti tute a nation at peace. "CHARLES C. FURNAS. Mayor of Medford." GENERAL HOLIDAY The public was reminded to day that downtown stores will be closed Saturday in observ ance of Armistice day. Food stores will remain open until 9 o'clock Friday night but all other stores will close at the usual time Friday. With the stores closing, Armistice day will be a general holiday here. The postoffice will be closed Saturday and there will be no mail delivery. The retail merchants commit tee will meet at 8 tonight at the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce to make plans for the annual Christmas opening, Yuletide decorations and au tumn Dollar Days. The problem of having the raisins and nuts sink to the bottom of the pan is solved. Sprinkling them over the batter after it has been poured into the layer pans is the key to this old-time riddle. SPICE CAKE li cup shortening 1 cup brown sugar 2 eggs, separated 8 cups sifted flour 2 teaspoons baking powder teaspoon soda 1 teaspoon cinnamon 1 teaspoon cloves M teaspoon nutmeg 1 cup sour millc )i cup molasses 2 teaspoons flavoring '4 cup chopped walnuts 1 cup raisins Cream shortening and sugar to gether. Add beaten yolks, mixing well. Sift flour, baking powder, soda, cinnamon, cloves, and nut meg together. Combine milk and molasses. Add alternately with .flour mixture to creamed mixture. Add flavoring. Fold in stiffly beaten whites. Pour into well greased paper-lined layer pans. Combine nuts and raisins and sprinkle over top of each layer. Bake in moderate oven (350 F.) 45minutes. B B B B A B OF New York, Nov. 9. UP) Dr. Livingston Farrand, 72, Cornell universitys' president - emeritus and former University of Colo rado president, is dead. Admitted to New York hospi tal November 2, he died of pneu monia last night. In the past few years, he had devoted much of his time to the advocacy of health insurance for the masses and was a leader in the fight against tuberculosis. He was president of the Uni versity of Colorado from 1914 until 1919 and became Cornell's fourth president in 1921. He retired in June, 1937, when trus tees named him Cornell's first president-emeritus. VIE AI O.S.C. Corvallis, Nov. 9. (if) A corn shucking contest the first held west of the Cascades will be an attraction at the third annual Oregon State Corn show at Ore gon State college December 1 and 2. Farmers will shuck the corn from the shock rather than from the field, however, because of the late date. Plans for a two-day education al program have been completed by C. W. Smith, chairman. This program will deal with produc tion and use of field corn under Oregon conditions. British Ship Sunk London, Nov. 9.
