For a time it looked like Cen tral Point would crack into the loop because of increased school enrollment making the Pointers a class A Institution, instead of class B, but Superintendent H. P. Jcwett Informs us that the deadline was passed with the ichool still lacking four students of the required 150 for class A ranking. Chapman, Pacific coast representative for the Cincinnati Reds and their arm system, with some Inter esting figures concerning the re mits of their last fall's tryout camps for young players, one of which was held here. Chapman wrote that 19 camps were held, with a total enroll ment of 1215. Cincinnati signed 25 young players, besides offer ing contracts to five others who haven't accepted as yet, and 14 players were invited to try out at the spring training camp of the Ogden, Utah, team in the Pioneer league, at their own ex pense, to see if they can win a contract. "One of our Medford camp graduates of the past was taken up to the big leagues this year," Chapman wrote. "Ho was Paul Gehrman, right hand pitcher of Bend, who i selected at the Medford camp in 1836. Washington drafted him from us our Birmingham club for 46,000. That price will pay for many Medford camp, but I regret that we had to take it. Gehr man may make his mark in the majors next year." Local-boy-makes-good note: In a press release from the Uni versity of Oregon, the following was written about Bob Smith: "Sensation of Oregon's offense in the past two games, against U.C.L.A. and Washington State, has been Lefty Bob Smith, here tofore chiefly noted as an ae curate southpaw passer. The game may turn out to be a whale of a clash, regardless of the records and comparative scores, etc. Look what Illinois did to Michigan last week. Illinois hadn't won a game all year and Michigan was undefeated and untied, and rated at least five touchdowns stronger than their opponents. The score was Illi nois 1A, Michigan 7, and It was no fluke victory. The Illlnl out played Michigan and deserved to win. We are not saying Ashland WILL beat Medford, nor will come close to It, for we don't think the Grizzlies have the man-power to successfully com bat the Tornado. But, stranger things have happened, and this is just a reminder. Although Ashland hasn't won a game and Medford hasn't lost one, don't consider the game In the bag until the final whistle. TERS PLAY Central Point high's 11-man football team, which held South ern Oregon conference Grants Pass Cavemen to a 13 to 7 vic tory lost week, will end its 1030 schedule next Saturday after noon, Armistice Day, with a game against Henley, strong Klamath county team, at Central Point. The game will start nt 1:30. In four games this season the Pointers hove lost only to Grants Pass. They defeated Henley in a previous game, 13 to fl, and beat the Ashland high reserves. A tic was played In a second tilt with the latter aggregation. Huskies Go South Seattle, Nov. 9. Acceptance of the Tiger offer was made in a telegram received this morning, Mayfield said. Coquille, undefeated, untied and unscorcd-upon in six Coos county league games, plays its final game next Friday after noon against Myrtle Point. In their six games the Red Devils have accumulated 221 points to their opponents zero, an average of almost 37 points per game. Coach Bill Bowcrman an nounced that Billy Piche, regular right halfback, and Harry Thurman, first string center, .were definitely out of the Medford-Ashland grid clash here next Saturday afternoon, Armistice day. 'Piche and Thurman both have been in bed all week with the flu," Bowerman explained, 'and positively will not be able to play against Ashland." Three ends Bob Leonard, Fred Gunnette and Don Moyer have also been abed with the flu, but may see action against the Grizzlies, the coach said. Bowerman plans to start Ray Johnson, the Junior speedster, in Piche's right halfback posi tion, and Jim Willis at center in place of Thurman. Stan Winter will be at one end posi tion and the mentor Is as yet undecided who will open at the other flank. Remainder of the club is in good condition. Hibbcrt and Howard will be at the guards, Clute and Barrow at tackles, Louie Thurman at quarter. Bob Newland at left half und Sauls- berry at full. Ike Orr may al ternate with Johnson at .right half. The game, which will wind up Medford's Southern Oregon conference season, will sjart at 2 o'clock sharp, and will be the first daytime tilt the Tigers have played this year. A win for Medford will deadlock the loop title between Klamath Falls and the Tornado. Bowerman announced that Jean Eberhart, Southern Ore gon College of Education ath lete director, would referee the clash. Joe Gray of Grants Pass and Parker Hess of Ash land will take care of the um piring and head-linesman duties. The club will shoot for the first time on the new Lcggett trap recently installed, which is a duplicate of the new traps used at Vandalia, Ohio, at the Grand American Handicap shoot this summer. It is said to throw the best double targets of any trap that is made. On Sunday, November 19, the club plans to hold its first tur key shoot and the members arc being urged to reserve the day for the annual event to assure its success. With the upland bird season closed and most of the hunters finished with their treks to the Klamath marsnes for ducks the club management expects a large crowd at the gun club where the shooter can shoot as much as he likes at clay birds. IS PLACED AT $3,774 The 1940 budget of the city of Jacksonville, as approved and submitted to the county assessor for extension on the tax rolls, calls for the raising by tax levy of $3,774. The Jacksonville budget com mittee was composed of Emil Britt, as chairman, G. W. God ward and H. C. Mechcm. The American football statistical bu reau, which weekly compiles individual and team performances of the nation's 112 leading colleges, this week nominates Johnny Knolla of Creighton as the nation's leading ground-gainer. After the bureau poured a hllt Ken Washington's running mate at U.C.L.A., Jackie Robin son, has the best average among all ball carriers who have gain ed more than 250 yards. Rob inson has netted almost 12 yards for each of the 21 times he has carried the pigskin. Ernie Lain of Rice leads In forward pass completions, hit ting his receivers 50 times in 122 attempts for 580 yards. Earl Clark, Texas Christian halfback, and Ken Kavanaugh, Louisiana State end, pace the pass snatchers with 17 catches' apiece.
