Relief From Standardization AND SIX DESIGNS IN ROME SPEECH I Noted Dead MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE. MEDFORD. OREGON. SUNDAY. OCTOBER 20. 1939. TWO FLOOR PLANS FOR LITTLE E This week Western Homes Foundation offers the stellar de sign of its "Home-Land" series of plans to meet the housing needs of families in the $600 to $1200 per year income group. This is the "Wayman," from the "Homes of Economy" group of the National Plan Service. The Wayman has two floor plans. It Brovides a selection range 01 six different exteriors, of which, three, with the basementless floor plan are illustrated. Built without a basement the Wayman has 6300 cubic feet. National home building costs range from 20 to 30 cents per cubic foot for average small homes of standard construction and equipment. At the highest figure, the Wayman should cost no more than $2000. A family having a $125 equity in a sub urban lot or country acre and with a good credit risk rating, may obtain an FHA class I, Title 3 loan, under new liberal terms, for building a home from the Wayman designs. More information about the building industry's Home-Land program for families of modest income may be had from retail lumber dealers or from Western Homes Foundation, 364 Stuart building, Seattle, Wash. Work ing plans and specifications for either of the Wayman designs illustrated may be had from the same sources. 1 HELP DAIRYMEN San Francisco, Oct. 28. lP) Industry-wide newspaper adver tising has increased milk sales in San Francisco nearly 15 per cent, the international milk deal ers' convention was told here to day. As a result of the campaign, he said, San Francisco's milk consumption has increased at a greater rate than that of any of the other 135 principal cities in the United States. U-Boat Sunk. "The anniversary of the every more glorious blackshirts' revo lution finds us as compact and strong as ever from the Alps to the Indian Ocean, said II Duce, speaking from the balcony of his office. . "Today, as during the harsh bloody eve of revolution, Fas cism demands for itself only single privilege, that of building and going forward always and in all circumstances with the people and for the people.' That the equivalent of a whole year of labor, enough to produce a small modern home, is wasted every time a round of heavy artillery is fired was pointed out today by George W. Porter, local retail lumber dealer, in a dramatic comparison between the destructive cost of war and the constructive cost of home building. "The cost of firing a single round of largest calibre artillery has been given by good author ity as $2030.10," Mr. Porter said. "That, in round figures, is as much as a skilled building me chanic will earn in an entire year. It is also enough money to build a modest small home. "We have, therefore," the lumberman said, "an interesting comparison in measuring the production value of an entire year s labor of a skilled work man in terms of a big death- dealing shell with fuse, firing powder, high explosives and everything, or in terms of a small home ready to move into. "But, our comparison ends with the cost. In terms of value received there is an entirely different story. The $2000 in vestment in artillery fire is gone in a single moment of flame, noise and smoke. Absolutely gone ... to say nothing of the probable destruction on the other end. "On the other hand, the $2000 worth of total human en deavor expended in fashioning every item that goes into the small home is truly a construc tive investment. The home will provide useful shelter, comfort, convenience and civilized living for years to come." The local lumber retailer said that despite the war fervor it was encouraging to note that home building in the northwest was going right ahead. He at tributed such continuance of construction to a growing reali zation on the part of the public that low-rate financing oppor tunities and other factors were never more favorable to the prospective home builder.
