New Air Record September air traffic figures announced today through the local station by R. W. Ireland, general traffic manager of United Air Lines, .showed that during the month United flew an estimated total of 17,000,000 revenue passenger miles, an Increase of 33 per cent over the September, 1938, total of 12, 716.445 revenue passenger miles. The company's unofficial total, a new record for September, was only one per cent under August, which marked Unlted's biggest month of all time, with 17517,434 revenue passenger miles flown. Final official figures may show that September will ex ceed the August record, the state ment said. Reservists To Meet Lieut.-Col. H. C. Dempewolf of Eugene, new in structor of reserve officers in this region, will be In charge of a meet lng of Rogue River chapter of the Reserve Officers association in -the Medford armory at 7:30 p. m. to morrow. SCHOOLS OF CITY IN FINE SHOWING WITH FIRE DRILLS Buildings Emptied Fast and Orderly in Surprise Test by Fire Department Chief Expresses Praise Uncensored War Film Here As part of National Fire Prevention week, the Medford fire department yesterday conducted drills in all the schools of the city and today Chief Roy Elliott declared that parents need have no concern over the safety of their children at school. The schools were emptied orderly and speedily, the chief said. Indicating the thorough manner In which they are trained in safety work by the school authorities. - It was a surprise drill In each of ihe schools, the pupils not knowing anything about It until the fire alarm bell rang, the chief explained. He said they were probably the most orderly drills he had ever seen In the schools. Time of evacuation also was excellent, the chief asserted, every school but the senior high school being emptied In less than a minute. Results Given . Tabulation of yesterday's results, with comparative figures for laat year in parentheses, follow: Roosevelt school. 107 pupils, emp tied In 45 seconds (315 pupils, 43 seconds In 1938); Lincoln school. 205 pupils, 35 seconds (245 pupils. 43 seconds); Jackson school, 254 pupils, 45 seconds (300 pupils. 49 seconds): Washington school, 310 pupils, 55 seconds (300 pupils, 53 seconds); St. Mary's academy, 167 students. 48 second (162 students, 43 seconds); Junior high school. 725 student, 58V4 second (735 students. 62 sec onds); senior high school. 625 stu dents. 80!i seconds (700 students, 88 seconds). The drills were conducted by Chief Elliott and Firemen James McNeill and George Shreeve. All rooming houses also have been checked on their fire alarms, the chief stated. T SETTING FIRES IN E Harris Claims No Reason for Setting Forest Fires No Grudge Against Indians Or Lumbering Concerns George Harris voiced a general de nial of the charges as he testified today In hla own behalf at his trial before Judge Claude McColloch and a Jury In U. S. district court. Harris was charged In two informations with the destruction of trees In two different sections of the Klamath Indian reservation last July 12. The destruction, the government con tended, was done by fires which Har ris set. Harris' defense was that he was not near the scene of the fires at the time they occurred. The fires oc curred In an Isolated part of the Klamath Indian reservation eight or nine miles from Sprague River, it was brought out. Shoes Evidence Tennis shoea with a diamond de sign on their soles figured largely In the case, the government presenting evidence intended to show that Har ris owned such a pair of shoes and that shoe prints of a diamond de sign were found at the scene of the fire. Some evidence was introduced by the government to establish that the same kind of shoe print had been seen fit a previous fire on July 0. Earl Grear and Walter Klsslner, defense witnesses, testified that dur ing parte of July 9 Harris had vis ited their homes In Chlloquln. They also testified as character witnesses. Klsslner said that In the 20 years he has known Harris he never knew the defendant to be In trouble ex- ceptlng the "deal" last summer. It waa brought out the witness referred to prosecution of Harris on an incen diary charge In state court at Klam ath rails last year. Harris waa ac quitted In state court. Animosity Denied Under cross examination by J. Mason Dlllard of government coun sel, Harrla asserted he had no rea son to set a forest fire, that he had grudge against neither lumber com panies nor Indians. Motions entered by defense counsel. Robert Y. Thornton, at the conclu sion of the government's case for a directed verdict of not guilty were denied. Also denied was a motion made at the conclusion of the defense for a directed verdict as to one of the two Informations. Presentation of evidence waa com pleted at noon and the case was re sumed this afternoon with the final statements of counsel to the Jury. Illness Halts Trial The trial was halted about 3 :20 yesterday when George Cropp, court reporter, became ill. A recess was taken until 9:30 this morning after an effort to procure a reporter here was unproductive. Word was sent to Portland and this morning Edwin Holmes took up the duties of re porter. He is an official federal court stenographer. Ten additional Jurors were drawn yesterday afternoon and ten more this morning. They were C. E. Applegate. Harvey Cassman, Guy W. Conner, H. J. Messenger, Walter Quls enberry. Dolph Phipps, Percy D. Lof- land and Robert Baker. McCorkle Sentenced C. 0. McCorkle, 71, Grant Pass miner who had pleaded guilty to a charge of violating the postal laws and whose case was referred to the probation officer for a complete in vestigation and report, was sentenced by Judge McColloch this morning to 18 months In prison and placed on probation for five years. He was ac cused of mailing an obscene letter to a minor girl at Wellpinlt, Wash. Del Murdock. 30, Pitt River Indian, was scheduled to go on trial to morrow morning on a second degree murder charge. He la accused of shooting Rowland Kirk, a Klamath Indian, on the Klamath Indian reser vation last July 13. Under court ap pointment. Attorney George Codding represents Murdock. 1940 Auto Plates Of Blue On White To Be Ready Soon SALEM. Oct. 10 (fp) The first of the 1940 automobile license plates were delivered to Secretary of State Earl Snell today, and will be distributed after November 22. The plates are blue on white background, the first time In his tory this combination has been used. The drawing for the first 100 numbers will be held at the capl tol November 22, with 20.000 names expected to be in the draw ing. No plates may be used before December 15.
