Harris Claims No Reason for
Setting Forest Fires No
Grudge Against Indians
Or Lumbering Concerns
George Harris voiced a general de
nial of the charges as he testified
today In hla own behalf at his trial
before Judge Claude McColloch and
a Jury In U. S. district court. Harris
was charged In two informations
with the destruction of trees In two
different sections of the Klamath
Indian reservation last July 12. The
destruction, the government con
tended, was done by fires which Har
ris set.
Harris' defense was that he was
not near the scene of the fires at
the time they occurred. The fires oc
curred In an Isolated part of the
Klamath Indian reservation eight or
nine miles from Sprague River, it was
brought out.
Shoes Evidence
Tennis shoea with a diamond de
sign on their soles figured largely In
the case, the government presenting
evidence intended to show that Har
ris owned such a pair of shoes and
that shoe prints of a diamond de
sign were found at the scene of the
fire. Some evidence was introduced
by the government to establish that
the same kind of shoe print had
been seen fit a previous fire on July
0. Earl Grear and Walter Klsslner,
defense witnesses, testified that dur
ing parte of July 9 Harris had vis
ited their homes In Chlloquln. They
also testified as character witnesses.
Klsslner said that In the 20 years
he has known Harris he never knew
the defendant to be In trouble ex-
ceptlng the "deal" last summer. It
waa brought out the witness referred
to prosecution of Harris on an incen
diary charge In state court at Klam
ath rails last year. Harris waa ac
quitted In state court.
Animosity Denied
Under cross examination by J.
Mason Dlllard of government coun
sel, Harrla asserted he had no rea
son to set a forest fire, that he had
grudge against neither lumber com
panies nor Indians.
Motions entered by defense counsel.
Robert Y. Thornton, at the conclu
sion of the government's case for a
directed verdict of not guilty were
denied. Also denied was a motion
made at the conclusion of the defense
for a directed verdict as to one of
the two Informations.
Presentation of evidence waa com
pleted at noon and the case was re
sumed this afternoon with the final
statements of counsel to the Jury.
Illness Halts Trial

yesterday when George Cropp, court
reporter, became ill. A recess was
taken until 9:30 this morning after
an effort to procure a reporter here
was unproductive. Word was sent to
Portland and this morning Edwin
Holmes took up the duties of re
porter. He is an official federal court
stenographer.
