Sht is shocked to over hear them planning to oo on a motor trip by thenuelves, to put her on her oun. V j! Chapter Two The Ranch BUFF was packing when her mother came to say they were going down to dinner. "Already?" Eleanor's eyes wid ened. "You aren't starting for the ranch tomorrow, Buff dear?" Buft kept her back to the light. She had bathed and powdered her eyes, she had run a wet comb through her mop of bright gold hair. She hoped she looked as usual but there was no sense tak ing chances. A frown of displeas ure knitted her brows at the note of hoarseness she heard in her own voice. "Might as Weill This gorgeous weather " She stopped, began again. "I may have to stay on long er than a week, Eleanor. We left things in a good deal of a mess, you know; and Lance told Mrs. Webb not to touch anything of his, even to dust it. You'll be" she stammered a little but forced herself to go on "you'll be all right here until I get back. Even if you have one of your headaches, you can get a nurse. It's not like the ranch, or some of the funny places we've lived in " At the thought of those funny places, and the responsibilities she had shoul dered with such pride, a lump came into ner throat, iney nad resented her, Lance and Eleanor! Or if not resented, exactly, they had been restive under her atten tions. She felt her breast rising on a tumultuous sob. "My leather jacket she muttered, and dived into the closet until she had regained control of herself. Mrs. Carroll was too nreoccunied with her own uneasy thoughts to pay heed to Buff. Her dear little girl, her precious daughterl It seemed too ungrateful, too actually mean to deceive herl But the child was really developing a resoonsi bility complex, ran the mother's anxious mind. For her own good a stop must be put to it at once. "Of course I can get a nurse, If I need one. You re not to worrv about us at all, darlingl It'll be glorious in the mountains this time of year. The aspens will be turning you remember we said we want ed so much to see them turn? And Mrs. Webb will take the best sort ot care of you. Are vou readv? Lance will be wondering what on eann nas Decome oi usr When The Cat's Away "pID itl" said Buff Carroll aloud and with triumph. The road which led to the ranch was even worse than she remem bered it. A heavy rain had exposed new boulders to surprise the un wary motorist. Her progress along it, she thought, resembled that of a snake in pain. But now she had attained the ranch house; pulled up her car by the side ot it. She FOR SALE Miscellaneous CUT-RATE PRICES Nu-Way Mat tress and Upholstery Co. Phone 293 209 West 8th 8t. A glance at her wrist showed it to lack a few moments of being five o'clock. There would be time for Mrs. Webb to make a nan of the fluffy little biscuits which were so good with wild strawberry Jam. Her horn gave forth the little tune by which she summoned the capa ble Atkins; and gave forth in vain. "Can it be that while the cats are away ?"she asked herself. She slid from beneath the wheel and approached the veranda. "H'ml Asleep in Lance's own deck chair. 'Able man, Atkins!' " The sun was in her eves so that she saw little more than a pair of long legs ana a nat tipped over a face. "Atkins!" she called sharply. And then, "Hi!" The figure shot to Its feet: eves which were certainly not those of AlKins blazed into ner own. "What the devil do vou mean bv all this row? I told you when I came nere i wanted quiet . . . good gosh!" "You may well say so," Buff re plied severely. She sat down on the top step, leaned against a pil lar, and returned elare for elare. "Doc told me I'd have 'em if I didn't pull up. But I have pulled up," he went on aggrievedly, more to himself than to her. "I've been out here for tnree oi the most confoundedly long days I ever lived through." She removed the ghillie from ner leu root, and rubbed an ach ing arch. 1 BUSINESS DIRECTORY Autn Loans.
