Lathrop uf Central Point, Who recently returned from London, England, where ah waa a delegate from Jackson county to oa World Farm Women'a meeting, disclosed yesterday a pleasant visit sh had with Mra. Frederick Banwell, mother of A. H. Bsnwell, manager of th Jackson County Chamber of Commerce, Mra. Banwell Urea tn St. Andrews, Bristol, England, which Is located 108 miles from London. Mrs. Lathrop spent the afternoon with Mrs. Bsn well and her daughter, Mlaa Leonora Nancy Banwell, th local Mr. Ban well' sister. Browns Visit Johnsons Here Mrs. Leonard Brown of Tssall, Cel., and her three children, Janet and twins, Robert and Rlntard an recent arrivals here to spend three week Tlsltlng. They are guests at th horn of Mrs. Brown's parents. Dr. and Mrs. Frederick H. Johnson at their home on East Main atreet. The family were accompanied to Medford by the Rer. She Is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Four Couples Hosts at Dinner Dance Saturday Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Thorodlke, Dr. and Mrs. Dwlght H. Flndley, Mr. and Mrs. Karl X. Janouch and Mr. and Mrs. Herschel O. Obye, were hosts Saturday evening for one of the larg est social affairs of the season. The four couples bid seventy-five guests to the dinner party. Valley Couple Wed Wednesday Lucille Verbeck Austin, recently of Mllbsnk, 8. Joseph Knotts united the couple In marriage. The bride wore a navy blue dress suit with matching accessories. She was attended by her daughter Bar bara Austin. Earl Sample, the bride groom's nephew acted as beat man. Lester Miller In Ber keley, Cal., Mra. Warner Patton and C. Rease Braley, prominent Medford couple, were united In marriage. Dr. Lawrence Cross of the North brae Community church In the bay district, officiated. Th bride wore a becoming dress of grape wine silk with matching ac cessories and a corsage of orchids. Following th ceremony, a wedding breakfast was served at the Berkeley Women's City club. Among the 35 guest present at the wedding and breakfaat were th bride' younger daughter, Miss Heleu Patton of Ssn Francisco and Charles Braley, aon of Mr. uraiey. Mr. and Mr. Braley planned to leave Berkeley at noon today by plane for New York where they will visit Mrs. Braiey's father, Edwin 'Varner and Mr. Braiey's mother. Frank Rogers, Jr., whose attend ance at Beaver camp waa sponsored by the Odd Fellows lodge, gave a very Interesting account of his experi ences. Following tne pro gram, refreshments were served. Zonta CTubWill Convene Monday The Zonta club of Medford will meet at the Glrla'. community club Monday evening at eight o'clock. A study of neutrality has been arranged by Miss Josephine Klrtley, program chairman, to follow the business ses sion. Mrs. Thora Lawrence will present a resume of the existing Neutrality Act and of the proposed changes, and members of the club will follow with reviews of articles which have een assigned to them for study. Ann Bannan Talks At Annual Church Luncheon Affair The annual luncheon given by the Women's Missionary society at the First Presbyterian church last Tues day, waa a very successful affair. Members In charge of srrangements were: Mrs. Edith Baker, chairman Mrs. R. s. Daniels, Mrs. Clyde Webb, Mrs. E. a, Randolph, Mrs. A. J. Hsn by, Mrs E. Iverson, and Mr Carl Brommer About one hundred and fifty women attended. Mrs. James H. Edgar, Preabyterlal president, returned thanks, A trio comprised of Katherlne Wendt, Margaret Huson, and Jean McAllister, accompanied by Mra. Eva Marah, ssng three beautiful selec tions. Miss Ann Bannan, the speaker, was Introduced by her childhood friend. Mrs. E. Iverson. Miss Bsnnan told msny interesting facts concerning her work In Gsmble, St. Lawrence Island, Alaska, the most Isolated mission field. Generally there Is no communication with the out side world from October until the following June. She told of the pro gress that has been made In teaching the Eskimos habit of cleanliness, Im proved methods of child care, higher moral atandards, and to consider the women on a more equal basis with the men. She told of Incidents which show how the Eskimos have benefit ted by the Christian Influence and spiritual training. Miss Bannan alao told of many unusual habits and customs. She exhibited garmenta to show the cloth ing worn by the people living In that climate and the manner In which the babies are dressed. At the close of her talk, her listen era were privileged to ssk questions about her work and life In Alaska. Mrs. Sherman L. Divine offered the closing prayer. Mlaa Scher rer last week received her pilot's certificate, the first ever Issued to a woman here. The credentials, earned through In- . atruction In flying since January 16 of this year and a teat solo flight last month, were received from In spector C. L. Walker of the civil aeronautics authority, whose head quarters are In Portland. Miss Scherrer, while enthusiastic over flying. Is most matter-of-fact In describing her experiences In learn ing the blrdman's art. She la a stu dent of Thomas A. Culberteon, Jr.. superintendent of the airport, and one of a large group. Including an other girl, Mls Lorena Rose, receiv ing Instruction here. Miss Rose has also reached the solo phase In her lessons. A. H. Bsnwell, manager of the chamber of commerce, is particularly proud of his assistant as the local chamber has long and consistently worked for Medford's prominence In the aeronautical field. The pretty blonde miss lists 35 hours of solo flying to her credit and Is said to handle a plane with the sure touch of a veteran. She does not look upon her achieve ment with more satisfaction than might be expected from one who has recently mastered the Intricacies of driving an automobile. Aa to what the future may hold for her In the sky, Miss Scherrer Is Social Affair Enjoyed at Beck Home Wednesday Medford Llona club auxiliary held their first social affair of the aeason Wednesday evening at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Michael Beck, on the Old Stage road. Twenty-four Llona and ladles were present and In cluded Mr.- and Mrs. Carl Blsmark, Dr. and Mrs, C. L. Coyle, Mr. and Mrs. J. A. McDougall, Mr. and Mra. Ray Marti, Dr. and Mra. C. L. Federated Council Will Meet Friday The Federated Missionary council will meet at the Nazarene church Friday afternoon at 3 o'clock. Women of the Baptist church will have charge of the program and a drama depicting "The Women of the Agea" will be a feature of the after noon. A business meeting will be follow ed by refreshments. Lemery Home Is Meeting Scene of Musical Society The Muslcsl Society of Medford held Its first gathering of the fall season Friday evening at the home of the president, Mra. Charles W. Lem ery In Roseborough addition. The session opened with Mrs. Lem ery welcoming the numerous new members and outlining a general program for the year. Mra, J. C. Col Una advised ths group of th club library program for Miss Way Wool sey who was not present at the meet ing. Later In the evening a trio enter tained with musical selections. In the group were Catherine Wendt. Margaret Huson and Jean McAllister. Mrs. Eva H. Marsh accompanied them. Also Included In the evening's program waa George Maddox, well known Medford tenor who presented two selections. He was accompanied by Mrs. Maddox. Meeting The Medford Business and Profes sional Women's club held their regu lar meeting last Thursday evening at the Girls Community club. The Declaration of Independence was read by Laura York after which Judge Earl B. Day gave a very Inter esting talk on the subject "What Is Democracy," After Judge Day's talk a short business meeting was held and Lunetta Bussey, program co ordinator outlined the program for the following year. The meeting was In charge of Gladys York, chairman of the publlo relations committee. After the meet ing refreshments were served. Gladys York was assisted by Evelyn Mat thews and Delia Flynn. Roae Hous ton, president, presided. Fall Card Party Friday Afternoon St. Mark's Guild of the Episcopal church will open Its fall card party season Friday afternoon. Guests attending are asked to gather at the parish hall on North Oakdale avenue at 1 :30 o'clock for an afternoon of bridge or pinochle. Officers of the organization will act as hostesses.
