SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 21, 1939. v I Kearly 54.000 new low-cost homes have been built In five Pacific north west states within the past 30 months through the effort of retail lumber dealers. These figures were developed from ft survey by the Western Retail turn be rraen's association of actual con struction in 25 representative com munities in the states of Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana and Nevada it was revealed today by H. A. Thierolf, local lumber dealer and regional committeeman of the West ern dealers' association. "The survey showed that by actual count 3,699 new small homes costing lew than 5,000 each have been built In these 25 sample communities since early 1837." said Mr. Thierolf. "On the basis of 574 communities in the five states and ft conservative estimate of the aggregate experience for our association's territory, we are safe tn saying that not leas than 53,980 new small homes have been built In the 30-month period." The committeeman said that the Western association's survey had been made as a part of a national survey conducted by lumber dealer associa tions in an effort to determine the extent of low cost homes construc tion as a private industry effort. He said that on the basis of returns thus far received, the Western dealers were far In the lead of the field. Mr. Thierolf said that It waa par ticularly significant that 62 per cent of the new homes were built for a cost of less than 92,500. "These figures provide rather star tling evidence of two things," the dealer committeeman declared. "They indicate the overwhelming demand today is for the very low cost modern home, and they prove that retail lumbermen, through development of better designs and Improved services In home planning, financing and building are doing an outstanding Job in providing low cost housing by private Industry methods." (AP) The state hydro-electric commission said today a hearing on ft proposed public utility district for Portland would begin next Friday. The plan contem plates purchase of Portland General Electric and Northwestern Electric company facilities by the PUD, whtch would use Bonneville power. Harry M. Kenln, chairman of the Bonnevllle-for-Portland committee, said one witness would be E. H. Mil ler, Salem, one of the largest stock holders In the Portland General Elec tric company. Renin asserted Miller was chairman of a committee of bond and stock holders estimated at 700. PUD proponents favor Issuance of revenue bonds to buy the private power companies, but have asserted they do not Intend to ask for a property levy. f IN SUMMER HEAT PORTLAND, Sept. 23. A witness sold he confronted the boys with a can of green paint and a brush on school grounds, but sent them away after scolding them. When he turned to re-enter the school buildings he faced huge In scriptions and swustlkas painted on the structure. The boys had fled. Reports also poured into police headquarters of swastikas painted on automobiles and sidewalks. One mo torist reported a swastika two feet square had been painted on his auto mobile while It was parked in front of his home. 4 SAN FRANCISCO, &spt. 23. NEW HAVEN. Conn.. Sept. 23. (AP) The Winchester Repeating Arms company said today it had Increased price on shotgun shells by S per cent and on rifle cartridges by 7i per cent. A spokesman for the company said the boost was caused by "un settled conditions" increasing the cost of raw materials. There have been no Increases In the price of rifles and shotguns, he said.
