Delwln O. Hurley of Ashland was given a permit to camp at Greeley creek in the Applegate near Wagner Gap. Permits may be obtained from the office of Karl L. Janouch, supervisor, or from ranger stations. E Mervln Burnett, charged with bur glary not in a dwelling, was sentenced to serve two years in state prison today by Circuit Judge H. D. Norton. Burnett entered a plea of guilty, and admitted a series of burglaries in this city and vicinity. Charles H. Hopkins, charged with the Issuance of spurious checks was sentenced to serve four years In state prison. Charles Hterholzer. charged with larceny by embezzlement, entered a plea of guilty, and passing of sen tence was continued. Hlerholzer, for mer clerk for the C. E. Gates Auto company, Is chargd with appropriat ing $450 to his own use. Vance Jones, charged with threat ening the commission of a felony, plead guilty. Sentence was deferred. Ira William Bradford, charged with burglary not in a dwelling, In Ash land, also entered a plea of guilty. Lloyd N. Durkee. charged with lar ceny from an auto, also entered a plea of guilty. Durkee is charged with theft of a purse containing $14 belonging to Maxine Watts, from a parked car In the city of Rogue River. Henry B. Zamacoma, 17-year old Mexican, and Ambrosa M. Canles, 18-year old Filipino, charged with burglary not In a dwelling, waived preliminary hearing In Justice court this morning and were ordered held to await grand Jury action under $500 bonds each. The two youths allegedly broke a window In the rear of the West Side Groceteria on Sixth street Monday night and stole $30 worth of goods. They were nabbed by city police yes terday with some of the Btolen prop erty in their possession. It was claimed. The youths, according to their story, left San Francisco a week ago and worked a few days picking pota toes In Klamath county, arriving In this city last Saturday night. Earl was hit by the truck when he chased a .rubber ball into Bar nett road, Just as the truck, full ol gravel, made a left .hand turn off the Pacific highway Into Barneti road. (AP)A pencilled message in a bottle washed up on the Norwegian coast provided a sequel today to the disappearance of Charles Backman, 27-year-old Swedish flyer lost on an attempted trans-Atlantic solo flight last May. A customs officer at the Swedish Norwegian border reported finding the message, which he said bore Backman's name and told of a crash In mid-ocean. The writer said he would be lost, if no help came within three days. (Backman. who had lived for time In St. Louts and Chicago, took off for Sweden from St. John's, Newfoundland, last May 16 and was unreported thereafter. (AP) The first prune drier fire to be reported this season occurred Mon day morning at Umpqua. 20 miles west of Roseburg, when the 10.000 plsnt owned and operated by John Bacon was totally destroyed. The fire also consumed about 1800 bushels of fruit. The drier was one of the largest and most modern in the Umpqua district. The loss is re ported to be partially covered by Insurance. Pi Thirty passengers with German passports were refused permission today to sail for Europe in the Italian liner Rex, as the result of an order from the line's Genoa office. No explanation was made of the order, which denies passage to per sons with German or Czechoslovak passports, but It was believed Intend ed to prevent the searching of Ital ian ships on the high seas by the British and capture and Internment of enemy nationals. Baroness Ruth Oppenhelm. wife of a wealthy German banker. Ktith arina Weber, a domestic who had worked In this country ten years, and Kurt Muller, who had tourist class reservations, were escorted off the ship with their baggage. Miss Weber and Muller both wept, but the baroness reacted with a ahow of temper. "Even In the last war the British did not take any women and lntem them," she said angrily. She planned to return to Colongne, Germany, to look after her three children, from two to five years old. Her husband. the baron.
