The 46 were members of an expe dition which left France last spring aboard the tiny trawler L'Isle Bour bon to start a lobster fishing station on volcanic St. Paul, midway between the southern tips of Africa and Aus tralia, and close to the northern limit of the Antarctic ocean's dreaded drift ice. The world knew nothing of their fate between September 13, when they set out from Madagascar, about 1,700 miles away, and Monday, when their SOS call was heard. The French government Appealed to United States naval authorities to try to establish wireless contact with them after a day of unsuccessful attempt to reach them from French colonial stations and after France sent urgent calls to all French ships in the vast Indian ocean to rush there. The Paris ministry of colonies con firmed today the calls for help had been received from the "cursed Isle" so-catted because of Its loneliness, rats, tiny difficult harbor, and the undersea volcanoes which formed it.
