Busy Week Ahead For Methodists The Main Street Methodist church will have a full program of Intercut thla week. A Christmas pageant, which has been In preparation for a month, will be presented tonight. A pageant, written by a member of the church. Holly Michaels, was pre sented with much success. There will be no charge for tonight presenta tion. On Friday evening the annual Christmas tree and appropriate ex ercises will be enjoyed at the church. A beautiful tree has been Installed. (AP) The W. D. Miller Construction company of Klamath Falls waa low with a bid of $29,800 for construction of a new fish hatchery at Klamath Falls, the state game commission said. (AP Self defense una the plea offered today by Jesse Phillips as he sought free dom fr.im a charge of murdering Frank Bryant and wounding Mrs. Elsie Carlson, long Phillips', common law wife. In a shooting here last October 10. In clear, even tones marked by not the slightest hesitation, Phillips gave his version of the shooting. Ho first told of knowing Mrs. Carlson since he was 13 years old and living with her for the past 10 yeara. Her habits were a source of worry to him, he claimed, and he said he tried to protect her from ihem. On October 19, while driving Into La Grande, he said he waa behind an automobile, the occupants of which he csuld not identify at the moment. Someone fired a shot, nar rowly missing his dog and he stop ped. Approaching the city limit, he said he reccgntred Mrs. Carlson's daughter Betty, 15, and followed the car because he had some mall for her. The car stopped before a residence and Phillips got out of his machine and approached. As he did so. Bryant leveled a pistol at him and Mrs. Carlson shortly afterward came out of the house with a gun. Philips said he called out and told them to put the guns away and the shoot ing started. One shot blinded him, ho said, and he fired back. On his third shot he saw Bryant slump over the wheol but In the meantime he said he had been wounded In the side so he walked from the scene to police headquarters. The Jury examined both automo bllca and found on Phillips' machine two apparent bullet marks. C., president of the International Wood workers of America, today denounc ed the Dies congressional committee which recently investigated un American activities by describing It as "neither fiah nor flesh but mostly foul." He ws here for a meeting of the Grays Harbor branch of the I.W.A. Referring to a Portland officer's testimony before the Dies commit tee assailing htm, Prltchett asserted the testimony wns "based on state ments without evidence" to attack "me personally and through me to utack the union.' "In my opinion," he said, 'the Dies committee Is neither fish nor flash but mostly foul and Is the spearhead of reaction based on unreliable testi mony. They produced no facts only prejudice." PRESIDENT TOLD OLSEN AID PLAN WASHINGTON, Dec. 17. (AP) Culbert L. Olson, California's governor-elect, told President Roosevelt today tho federal government should take over the burden of old age pen sions and payments should start at 60 instead of 66 years. He asked the president, during a White House conference, to support such a proposal In the new congress as an amendment to the social se curity act. Tho meeting was the first between tho cnlef executive and Olson since the latter been mo the first Demo crat to be elected governor of Celi- lornla lu more than 40 years.
