T 1 km I Hlty nnlea If an Idea advanced the other day by Harry Hlnmnn la carried out, the worrlea of Secretary of State Earl Snell regarding the yearly color scheme of Ore gon's auto license plates are at an end. The Issue will be put squarely up the football teams of Oregon State college and the University of Oregon: to them will go the hon or of deciding, on the field of battle, what combinations of color will bo used each year to dec orate the plates. Harry, advertising mannger of Mann's department atore and a rabid sports fan. Rave birth to wh:t seems like a red hot Idea when he saw the new 10311 Oregon license plate black and yellow, close to the Oregon state college color of hlaek and orange. Suddenly, the Idea struck him that the coloring of the plates could be determined, year after year, by the stnte'n two major gridiron aggregations. Hurry's entire plane ) lmp) lhl: K;ili year, let the rotor or the phites he determined hy the On'Ron-Orecnn Stnte font hall Riime played the nreceedlng full, with the plutei taklm; the color of the winning M-hool. Because It has lieen the custom to clmne the color of the plates each year, Harry explained that such could be continued, more or less, hy slmply changlng the color of the background and numerals, should Oregon or Ore gon State win two years In succession, For Instance, if Oregon State won two seasons In a row, the platea could be orange with black numerals one year and black with orange numerals the next. In case the two teams tied, the platea would retain the coloring determined by the team which last won, with a shift, of course, In the background and num eral hue. So far as we are concerned, It la a great Idea. It Is a natural. What could possibly be a better method of determining the color of Oregon's license plates than by letting the two state Institutions do so through the medium of their football teams? Both combinations of colors, yellow and green, and orange and black are highly suitable in all respects. How about it, Mr. Snell, or whoever chooses the colors? Can you think or a better method? mm moo. It won't be Ions now until college coacnea and representatives start beating the atlcks in search o( prom lslng prep gridiron material. (AP) Csrnegle Tech's football victory over Pittsburgh waa ranked offldaly aa No. 1 upset of the 1938 sports sea son by the 70 sports experts participating In the Associated Press eighth annual poll today, but analysis of the returns reveal that the outcome of the heated National League pennant race actually was the biggest surprise. 807 829 820 2466 Union Oil Handicap .' 69 59 59 177 Williams 166 130 98 393 Orames 104 147 144 393 Greenwood 184 152 187 523 Frlsbee 132 143 123 398 Simmons . 147 179 212 538 793 610 823 2424 Moblloll . One group suggested that the Chicago Cubs' fast finish was the biggest surprise. Another group took the position that It was the collapse of the Pittsburgh Pirates which was most astonishing. With points awarded on a 3-2-1 basis as each expert made three nom Inatlona to the "upset" list. Carne gie Tech's 20-10 triumph over Pitt was given a total of 53 Vi points to top the list. Thirty-one points went to the Cubs for their pennant victory and 25 to the Pirates for their col lapse. Combining the Cubs and Pi rate's points would produce a total of 56 points, a half point more than was credited to Carnegie Tech. In the actual tabulation which ranks Carnegie Tech's feat at the top. Joe Louis' one-round knockout of Max Schmcllng was rated as the next biggest surprise. Then followed the Cubs' pennant victory: Seabtscult's victory over War Admiral In their match race: the Cincinnati Reds' fine showing In the National League race; tnc pirates' collapse, and the Chicago Blackhawks' triumph In the Stanley cup hockey playoffs. All told 54 surprises were mention ed In the bsllottlng, with football contributing 19 and baseball 12. Box ing and golf followed with six each. COUGARS WIN, 51 TO 23, OVER WILLAMETTE FIVE PULLMAN.
