PAROLE SYSTEM CALLED USEFUL BY PENAL EXPERT MADISON. Wis. (UPiAttacks on the system of parole in prison ad ministration often are "unwarranted and unjustifiable." never ding to John J. Hannan, for 13 years president of the board supervising Wisconsin's penal and charitable Institutions. Hannan. a director of the Ameri can Prison association, believes that the parole system, particularly as practiced In Wisconsin, Is the "most useful, most humane, and highly soclat method of placing back in free society those who have served prison terms." A one-time constant Associate and advisor to the late u. S. Sen. Robert M. LaFollette. Sr.. Hannan la not only a rigorous champion of a par ole system under strict supervision, but of a program for intelligent treatment and training of prisoners for return to society. "Prisons must do something other than punish and deprive them of liberty." he declared. "Tf prison pro crams are to be made solely to care for the 8 to 8 percent who never come out of those institutions, and (snore the need of the more than B0 percent who are to return to soc iety, It would be truly a case of the tail waaglng the dog." Much of the criticism of parole. Hannan believes, comes because of "lark of accurate Information by those who make it. or Is Inspired br persons who for undlsclcsed reas ons want to revive the use in pen ology of th e ph 1 1 osophy of an ye for an eve.' "Tn their ienoranee they would make these Institutions real breeding places of crime. They would strike from the hands of prison adminis trators the most effective devices of rehabilitation, such as produce labor and release under supervised parole." British Ship Bombed BARCET-ONA. Casting players for a Dickens story on the stage or screen is no Job at all because the famous Eiignsn j writer dpscnoen every cnnracier in elaborate detail. "His detail was so vivid that the reader almost sees the character as he reads," says Edward L. Marin, who currently ia directing "A Christmas Carol." "As a result we know exactly what type to look for In every role." Dickens also performed another service for the movies when he per sonally supervised the illustrations used In his stories. "Reginald Owen's makeup as Scrooge In the picture." says Marin, "was designed by Jack Dawn from a close study of the pictttres and text and the use of a new kind of makeup that gives Owen that gaunt look required." Marin points to the makeup of Leo G. Carrol as the ghost of Jacob Marljy In the story as an example of how closely Dickens cast his char acters, prom the boots to the ban- dae around the jaws, every item In the appearance of the actor came directly from the pages of the book. Gene tnd Kathleen Lockhart were cast as the Crntehits because of their familiarity with the roles, which they play every Christmas at a presen tation of the story at their home, with their children and neighbors. Thev are members of the Dtckens'.an society and know the writer's work intimately. , Their daughter June was cast as their daughter in the picture, mak ing it probably the first time that a man. wife and child have been cast to play a father, mother and daughter. Pew changes are being made In j the original dialogue of "A Christ- i mas Carol" and the few changes that were made were merely to modern- i ize obsolete phrases that might have , puzzled present day audiences. Marin said. The aettlncs and properties all are authentic reproductions of Lon don in 1840. he pointed out.
