HOLLYWOOD (UP) The favorite
author of the Hollywood casting dl-
rectors is Charles Dickens who. they
say. would have made a great cast
ing director himself.
Casting players for a Dickens story
on the stage or screen is no Job
at all because the famous Eiignsn j
writer dpscnoen every cnnracier in
elaborate detail.
"His detail was so vivid that the
reader almost sees the character as
he reads," says Edward L. Marin, who
currently ia directing "A Christmas
Carol." "As a result we know exactly
what type to look for In every role."
Dickens also performed another
service for the movies when he per
sonally supervised the illustrations
used In his stories.
"Reginald Owen's makeup as
Scrooge In the picture." says Marin,
"was designed by Jack Dawn from
a close study of the pictttres and
text and the use of a new kind of
makeup that gives Owen that gaunt
look required."
Marin points to the makeup of
Leo G. Carrol as the ghost of Jacob
Marljy In the story as an example
of how closely Dickens cast his char
acters, prom the boots to the ban-
dae around the jaws, every item In
the appearance of the actor came
directly from the pages of the book.
Gene tnd Kathleen Lockhart were
cast as the Crntehits because of their
familiarity with the roles, which they
play every Christmas at a presen
tation of the story at their home,
with their children and neighbors.

society and know the writer's work

Their daughter June was cast as
their daughter in the picture, mak
ing it probably the first time that
a man. wife and child have been
cast to play a father, mother and
daughter.

mas Carol" and the few changes that
were made were merely to modern- i
ize obsolete phrases that might have ,
puzzled present day audiences. Marin
said. The aettlncs and properties all
are authentic reproductions of Lon
don in 1840. he pointed out.
