Neville Chamberlain blmself, I The I Capital Parade j (Continued from Page Ona ) j Tourist Industry FOUR monthg ago the Jackson County Chamber of Com merce assumed active leadership in an effort to organize communities and resort operators for a practical, business-like promotion of tourist travel to this area. There was an obvious need for supplanting existing hit-or-miss effort with an intel ligently planned, coordinated program. It was recognized that delay in effecting auch a program would be costly; the Golden Gate International Exposition is almost at hand with an estimated minimum attendance of twenty million visitors. Every one of these twenty million vacationists becomes a potential guest of this area a PAYING guest, tool Preliminary surveys were made so that the habits and needs of the touring public might be determined. The ground work was laid for a comprehensive, cooperative program which was to follow. The first step has now ' communities and resort owners effected under guidance of the Commerce. Here is encouraging progress I This initial- organization will undoubtedly experience its growing pains there will be many problems and details to iron out, but its foundation' ia right; its method of operation sound. Here is an association of communities and resort owners meeting mutual problems on a common ground,, in a spirit of friendly cooperation. On such a basia success seems assured! What are these mutual problems t ' The first important one is attracting tourists and vacation ists to this richly endowed area. This can be achieved through a coordination of all advertising' and publicity, efforts into ONE well directed campaign. To .become most effective, this campaign must be in harmony with those of the Oregon State Highway Commission and the Association. Once the vacationing publio has been sold on the glories of southern Oregon's scenic attractions, the important job of properly accommodating and entertaining our guests becomes a major problem. Facts must be faced! Surveys conducted by the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce show a decided need for IM PROVEMENT and EXPANSION of facilities for serving the touring publio. Some resort operators have already realized and met this need ; others MUST tise southern Oregon as a vacation playground, a tourist paradise," we must DELIVER It is a healthful sign when reach the point of ORGANIZING to solve such problems as these! ' WITHIN the near future the Commerce will sponsor a personnel of resorts, service stations and ALL publio and private enterprise related to the tourist industry, will be schooled in the varied attractions of th'iB area and the best methods of serving the motoring public. It all adds up to this : The visitor must be warmly received ; friendly hospitality must be extended, and adequate facilities f. hi. nnmtnrt en1 M TOrtai'nm Sit t miiat tlB DfOVWed. FROM a mass of inquiries, reports' of tourist bureaus and surveys of various types, these facts are sifted out: The tourist business here for 1039 will exceed the best previous year by 40 percent; many who have planned trips to the west and the Golden Gate International Exposition next year have fore gone their 1038 vacation so that more time and money will be available for 19:10 ; average Mr. and Mrs. Vacationist will expect and demand BETTER accommodations and will be willing to PAT MORE for them when they tour the western states next year. This information is enlightening and encouraging i A bumper' tourist crop will definitely affect ALL who live in southern Oregon for tourist dollars flow rapidly through the arteries of business. Those who are directly connected with the tourist industry, and the many more who are not, will benefit by a stimulated tourist business. From a standpoint of self-interest alone, EVERYONE should lend a helping hand to the Jackson County Chamber of Com merce in this laudable and timely effort to put the tourist in dustry here on a sound, progressive basis. H. G. who la scarcely a pink, made his political reputation administering housing and related measures which a good many people In thla country would probably deacrlba aa socialism. Throughout tha twenties, the American Republican party waa not even like the British Tory party before Joe Chamberlain. It was Ilka tha Tory parly before the reform bill. Big business ran the Republi cans, and the Republicans ran the country, and that was all there waa to It. This stata of affairs waa cur iously glorified aa tha reign of "pri vate enterprtae." and obviously nec essary social welfare measures, which might have been conservatively writ ten and administered, were frowned on aa "Interfering with private en terprise" or "the American spirit." Tha Republican years had their natural climax In the Hoover ad ministration. A great depression tragically underlined the pressing need for certain social and regula tory statutes. In the White House raa Herbert Hoover, a painfully hon est, eourageoua and high-minded man, whose only dtfect waa a re ligious belief In tha political theory of hla party. For example, when It was as plain as the noae on your face that the millions of unemployed needed relief, and whan the local relief machinery had already alt but completely collapsed, he stlli insisted that "private enterprise" and "local Looks Ahead been taken ; an organization of within this county has been Jackson County Chamber of Shasta Cascade. When we adver THE GOODS! , communities and resort owners Jackson County Chamber of series of classes in which the rollius in this entire cooper Inlllatlva" must be allowed to handle the problem. Ivan at the very close of hla term, when social unrest waa frlghtenlngly acute, a amall appropriation for re lief loans to statea waa aa far aa he would go. Had he accepted tha Inevitable and offered a federal re lief program, we might now have a sensible relief system. Instssd. he turned his back on reality, with the result that the present relief eye tern, worse In every way than any thing Hoover could have dreamed, has now been Imposed upon us.t Throughout the Roosevelt yeara. until very recently, the Republican party showed no sign of change from the Hoover alUtude. There were no leaden to challenge big business' power In the party, and American big business, which haa alwaya cher ished tha open shop aa a sort of sacred Institution, refused to give In anywhere because the new power of labor meant aurrender on the open shop. Now, however, the open v. elcwed shop la almost a dead Issue. New leadera. Ilka Lodge and Simp son, are springing up. In some states, big business power among the Re publicans is being challenged, and the average American, conservative at heart, la asserting himself In tha party. The party la learning the Brit ish lesson, and. If tha lesson la un derstood widely enough, the party may become a living political force once mote. Now vitamin B Is sometimes called the "appetite promoting" vita min, and In fact the same vita min supplement, containing B and other , vitamins, will help an un derweight person with poor appetite to gain weight and vitality. Thla la too much for the layman with a amatterlng of medical knowledge to handle. He la apt to ask me how I reconcUe such contradictory assertions. A look Into physiology may help to clarify the apparent conflict. In the normal atomach there are con tractions of the muscular coat when the . stomach haa been empty for a While, and these contractlona cause the sensation we call hunger. If the corrections are more vig orous than normal they may cause actual pain or distress hunger pains. Chewing palatable food quick ly Inhibits or stops the contractions. Now a good many overweight In dividuals have rather too much ap petite, as they say. In a sense there may be some foundation for that belief, for certainly many overweight Individuals crave and can eat larger quantities of sugar, candy or sweets than the normal Individual does or can. But the overeating of the over size Individual la due rather to the atony or say the flabby or weakened atate of the atomach muscle and the consequent desire for a greater quantity of food in the atomach to give that satisfying sense of fulness or repletion which naturally regu lates the Intake of food. Not only that, but also the flnbblness of the voluntary belly muscles, the muscles of ths abdominal wall. In one who takes little exercise, la a factor of overeating. In his book "The Little Things In Life" (Appleton-Century) Prof Barnett Sure suggests that prolonged deficiency of vitamin B In the diet leada to atony of the atomach mus cle, ao that the hunger contractions are weaker and appetite la poor.
